Case 530: “Some Days I Just Can’t Win”

Well I got the 530 back together after doing a dry clutch job which everything went smoothly.
Had the tractor out for a ride up and down the road (about 2000 ft total) yesterday. Everything went well yesterday. Today I had trouble getting it to go into reverse - all the forward gears were fine. The reverse shift rail was hanging up on the interlock button so I fixed it.
Put everything back together carefully and now the tractor won’t move. Took shift cover off again and cranked the tractor over trying the left engage/disengage lever and tried the right range handle and nothing moved in the transmission. Put everything back together carefully and tried it again and tractor doesn’t move an inch. No bad noises, nothing.
Any ideas? Some days I just can’t lay up a nickel !!!

First double check your hand clutch on the left, make sure it's engaged by pushing forward with resistance, and a slight snap into place. Check the triple range, make sure it is indeed in one of the gears, can be easy to miss. Give some more information, does the PTO engage? Can you feel the gears when you shift?

Do everything Tg advised: It's very easy to be out of gear engagement on the triple range, takes feeling sometimes. The hand clutch over-center type clutch engages forward with a prominent snap of 40-60 lbs pressure when adjusted right and discs are not warped. Check the PTO runs. If it runs then the drive shaft is running all the way back through the hand clutch, triple range, and passes through the hollow center of the transmission main drive shaft and out to the PTO. The transmission main drive shaft and so the transmission is driven pto off the hand clutch via the triple range. When you get the transmission buttoned up see if the PTO continues to run when you try tractor ground travel. If the hand clutch is engaged it drives the triple range and transmission for tractor ground travel.

I am not familiar with the late model 530 transmission shifting but judging from the shift pattern and parts manual diagrams it appears to be the same as earlier tractors. Be sure your forks are in the shift collars. I find it easier to tilt the cover to lineup the reverse fork first and then ease the cover down. Pic is from an older tractor, I think it is the same, check it out.

OK, here is a news flash update. I checked the main transmission and the shifter and the gears sounded and felt great on the shifter.
I then played around with the hand clutch on the left, and the three range lever on the right and was able to get the tractor going again.
So whatever I was doing the input shaft of the main transmission was not turning. The tractor does pump hydraulic fluid just fine. I did adjust the clutch, which should not have made any difference, but I only get one range out of three on the right hand lever which makes me believe that the problem is in that range transmission. Stay tuned if anybody has any ideas chime in.
So to clarify, I drove the tractor down the road, and it doesn’t seem to matter moving the right hand, lever the tractor always stays in the same range.

I doubt it would be a broken fork. It could be as simple as woodruff key #3, and pin #12 in shift lever #11. Before lifting the cover shift to neutral. After you get the locator pins broke loose and the cover lifted some the shifter rails will probably still hang up under the lip of the housing preventing the cover lifting further. You'll need something thin to slide in the gap and push the rails back to lift the cover. I had a thin, narrow steel rule that worked good for that.

One mystery solved and one to go! I hate it sometimes when I’m right and this happens to be one of those times. The shift Fork for direct and high range is broken. It shows a part number of G10398.
In addition to that, the gears on the top and bottom shafts have teeth that are missing on them from the shift for pieces going through them. These are the gears at the very rear of the tractor. I don’t have part numbers for these gears so I will need a parts diagram to determine the part numbers for them.
When I bought the tractor, the man’s son told me that he did something very bad to it, and he was right. The poor old guy had dementia and has since passed..

That's too bad, Usually a shift problem is further up in the linkage. I will post the triple range parts list. I didn't have time to get into your 530 post until a few days ago, do you have a tractor serial nr or know what year it is?

1963 is right. That is termed "early 530". The major changes started in 1964-65.

I'll do this tomorrow morning. There are 50 some parts. I will split it up in 2 parts with diagram and p/n's, shifter/linkages parts and gear train parts.
