Electrical Issues 68 Allis-Chalmers 180

Hello,

I have a 68 Allis-Chalmers 180. It's been running well for a year since I bought it for the 9 acres of farmland my wife and I inherited. One of the batteries developed a bad cell. I replaced both. I also replaced the starter thinking it might be going bad and drawing too much amperage. The new batteries started the tractor once. I ran it for about 4 hours. The batteries seemed dead after that. I noticed the ground wire was lose from the battery case to the tractor and replaced the wire. I placed the batteries on a repair charger and they seem ok now.

I just noticed that the voltage regulator has only 3 wires on it. The alternator is a delco-remy 10dn. Here is a pic:

Here is the voltage regulator:

Should there be 4 wires on this? If so where should the missing wire come from?

I appreciate any help you can give.

thanks,

dan

Welcome to the forums.

Is it charging? The 10DN will work with just the three wires. You will find drawings of them wired with either three or four wires on the web. A wiring diagram for your 180, will show you how AC originally wired it.

If your battery cable only is grounded to sheet metal, I suggest moving the ground location to a point on the main chassis, ideally a starter mounting bolt.
