First Gear to Break on 1937 John Deere B? (unstyled)

Hi all,

I threw our family's 1937 B into reverse while it was rolling forward downhill, and now it makes a grinding noise in all 4 gears and won't move. I opened the transmission and everything looked OK, I didn't find any shavings or anything in the oil. I know I broke something, but I'm not sure what. What's the first gear to break on these old Bs?

Thanks,
Zach

You may have damaged the first reduction gear.

What oil "didn't you find anything in"? Transmission?

Hi Ron,

Yes, the transmission oil. I was thinking it might be the first reduction gear. Is there a way to check it through the transmission box?

Thanks a bunch.

No. No way to check first reduction gear from the transmission case. I don't know for sure, but there may be a way to see the gear on the crankshaft by looking in from the clutch area. That means taking the clutch apart

If you pull the clutch fork out, you might see a little, did somebody add a drain plug to the FRG cover by chance if you can get any shrapnel out, or is there a plug on the top side towards the rear to look down in there with a small light?

Doubt if it is the reduction gear. They usually run for a long time. I broke one on my pulling G one day and part of it came fling out the top of the reduction cover but that is way more hp than that stock B is potting out. More than likely the overdrive gear in the picture. Every gear drives off that one.

Pull reduction gear cover off right side of tractor and look and see. It’s possible that bushing in the cover is gone as well check that while you are there
