Friend has a UM5 that he wants me to have, been out in the trees for a long time. Were they a good mower? Of course it needs a pitman stick, sickle, tires, belt and pto shaft. Previous owner made mounts for a hyd cylinder and a poor job at that. He wants scrap price for it. Another MM saved from the scrap yard. chris

I never used one out in the field but used to have one. I didn't care for the hand lift so I built a reproduction lift assembly from some original parts and some diagrams from someone who had one. Unfortunately I sold the mower years ago. I might have a picture of it somewhere yet. Will have to find it. I do have some parts if you need something.

I think those had 7 inch tires and they are no longer available. A friend of mine restored restored one a few years ago and had to use an 8 inch tire. To do this he cut a big washer with a 7 inch hole and 1 inch wide slipped it on the rim and then mounted the 8 inch tire. His had a cast rim that was bolted together so this was easy to do. It looked pretty good when he ws done. I mowed a lot of hay with one and they are a pretty good mower. My brother has one setting in the shed in field ready condition.

I bought one at an auction about 9 years ago for $5.00 It was the only bid, was sitting in a tree grove and we had to chain saw it free. Was in good condition yet but tires were shot too so I did the same thing and put on the 8" tires too, I cant remember just how we did it now but it worked. I too put on a makeshift hydraulic lift without welding so it is still original if need by.

I have seen some new 7" tires on some UM5 mowers but they were tractor tire design. Some of the older mini bikes used 7" tires.

Im on the IL/WI border near Lake Michigan, I've got 2 or 3 for parts, one has the origional foot lift as used on a U or Z and one has a home made hyd lift, the other origional hand lift.

Are any of you guys in Nebraska or Kansas by chance? Have a mostly complete mower id like a parts rig for, trying to get it set up on a friend's Z.

A picture would be nice.

I don't have a scanner currently so these are pictures that I took a picture of from a digital camera. I only have two pictures. All measurements were taken from original parts to make them exactly like the originals.

I have what looks like yours but worse. Was going to cheat and use some parts from a jd for the lift, but have not got that far. And its only been 11 years, walk by it every day.
