Valve cover gasket

Pulled the valve cover off one of my A's today and reset the tappets. The gasket was not in the best of shape, so I have a new one ordered. The old one was installed with RTV silicone. I don't recall if I had reused the old one at the time, or if it was a new one. Probably been 30 years since it was put on there.
Do most of you put the new ones on dry or use gasket cement of some sort?

I always glue valve cover gaskets to the valve cover with 3M weather strip adhesive. I leave the head side dry.

I used aviation Permatex. I think that's the same as what MM-TX mentioned. It keeps the gasket in good alignment.

I've never used aviation permatex, liquid in a bottle. Heard it used by lots on this site. Looks like good stuff, I'll have to try it. I was talking about old school Permatex #2, doesn't dry hard like Permatex #1. Both #2 & #1 are pookey in a tube.

You guys are all pretty much confirming the direction I was leaning. I think I still have some aviation Permatex on hand. I know I have some high-tack Permatex. I'll use one or the other of those and glue the gasket to the cover when it comes in. Thanks everybody!

I would agree with most of the folks there. I use an adhesive on one side and lightly grease the other. I know you already ordered a gasket, but they make silicone valve cover gaskets for A's now that are very nice and easily reusable.

I was not aware of that. I'll keep that in mind if this issue ever comes up again.
