I have an occasional problem with my JD 44 trip plow. Once in a while it will not stay down at the beginning of the furrow. It looks like the trip lever is not going all the way back when it doesn't stay down. Any ideas on what to check ?

I don’t about The John Deere lifting cam lock .
But on my Allis Chalmers , when it does that the lever spring is not tight enough to engage the roller into lock position.
See photo attached . Spring on My plow is upper left.
Wouldn’t hurt to take the wheel off and inspect the lift cam assembly. You could have broken or weak extension spring inside the cam. Clean out all the old grease and give a light fresh coating of good axle bearing grease. Just suggest ,
The springs are about 70 years old . Could have gone away from there intended strength.
Forgot this get some blocks of wood for leveling plow while wheel is JackEd up .

When it started happening I'd stop a the beginning of the row, give the rope a pull and see what happened. Most of the time the arm popped back. Once in a while the arm would stay forward.

Had one like that. Put a bungy cord on it to hold it back when lifted. Finally bit the bullet and overhauled the lift mechanism. There was a broken spring inside. If I can do it anyone can. Unbelievable the amount of dried grease and dirt inside. Parts are readily available.

Just a suggestion , may be to much old grease in the cam assembly to allow it free movement of spring to lock it. Not familiar with JD lift . Learning along with you.
