Ford 861 diesel wiring issue

Hello - Rebuilding my generator and replacing the wiring on my Ford 861 diesel. It was previously wired with a switch on the ground side, and then an added push-button to start (no key). My wiring kit is from this site. I left the switch on the ground side, but put a key switch back in and wired the original configuration for the start button by the gear shifter (removed the other push-button). New 12v grounded solenoid as starter relay. For whatever reason, the push-button won't start the tractor. But if I wire a push-button from the left side of the terminal block to the S terminal on the starter relay, it will start. Why won't the push button by the gear shifter start it? Do I need a starter relay that's not grounded through the mount?

That is the correct ground isolated solenoid for your tractor.

Hook the battery to the large right spot and the starter on the left.

Hook power that is switched by the key to the small post on right.

Hook a wire to the small post on left.
Ground this wire.
The engine should crank.
If it doesn’t the solenoid is boxed wrong or is bad.
Now hook this same wire to push button on trans.
The engine should crank when you push the button down.
If it doesn’t the push button on the trans is bad.

Very common for the push button on trans to be bad. Most likely the reason someone bypassed it with another start button.
You can NOT replace the button on the trans without taking the top of the trans off.

The YT ad description looks like it is a grounded base solenoid, not an isolated base.

The YT # 112395 is one that replaces the Ford/New Holland #311006 isolated base solenoid, according to the description.

I wonder who wrote that discussion.
Because a grounded through the base solenoid doesn’t fit a ford 801.

And based on the OP description it is not grounded through the base.
When wired correctly a 801 with the wrong grounded through the base solenoid will start to crank the second you turn the key on without doing anything else.

I'm going to try a solenoid that's not grounded through the base. I've triple-checked that I've wired it correctly according to the shop manual. Also, I had replaced the starter switch by the shifter and have tested that, so I know it's good. I have two starter relays that are both grounded through the base and both function the same way - the only way they start the tractor is to receive 12v through the S terminal. The non-grounded relay arrives tomorrow so I'll keep you posted on whether it works. Thanks for all the help.
