Howdy,

It's been so long that I had to re-sign up.

Any who, I have a year 2000 5210 JD with front wheel assist it's about 52 h.p.. I would like to find a plow for about 2 hours of use a year. I don't want to spend a lot of money on something that will get used so little. I have a 3pt. disc that does most of my work now a couple of hours a year for food plots and stuff.

As a farmer, a bigger bottom is less likely to plug up with trash than a small bottom, so I like 16 inch bottoms better than 14 inch.

But as a hobby plow person, I’m sure it is much more manly to have a ‘bigger plow’ and pull more bottoms if it is 14 or 12 inch bottoms….

Anyhow I have very tough sticky hard plowing clay ground. I would put a 2-16 plow on a 50 hp tractor and have a good time.

In more normal soil you probably could pull a 3-14 or maybe 3-16 plow and be fine. Here in my dirt that would work sometimes, but in a tough year then what do you do?

The answer depends a lot on your kind of dirt, clay, loam, sand, …

Dad farmed a few 100 acres pulling a 3-16 with a 45hp Oliver tractor, and a 2-16 plow pulled by a 35hp IHC.

I’d say they were designed for heavy pulling all day long, your newer smaller tractor is designed more for utility and not traction and power, so I guess a little conservative for what you can use?

I have a '98 5210 loaded tires & one set of wts.......3-14's with ease! Great tractors......💪🚜

Where I grew up in sandy soil a 45 hp tractor pulled 5-16s @ 4.5 mph. Where I live now the clay soil is a load for a 45 hp tractor pulling 2-16s. Since you're only talking a couple hours a hear, 2-16s should make the fun of plowing last just a bit longer.

Will depend on your soil type. Here 3 14’s would bring it to its knees in places. 75/80 hp rigs here pull 3 16’s.

Much depends on 2 or 4WD. For that small amount of plowing I'd choose a 2-14" plow, IMO it's easier to fine-tune the smaller plow for conditions. You don't want to plow up the layer joining the clay, just freshen the top-soil
In fact, for 2 hrs use a year, I'd strongly consider buying a 6' rototiller, and eliminate the disc for that type work. My cousin raises 10A of pumpkins a year and plants a 1A corn maize plot. He uses a 6' rototiller and eliminates the added expense and time of discing.

Not sure of your soil type and if you will be plowing an existing garden plot or will be plowing heavy sod to make a new deer plot.

JD 5210 tractor specs are 52 engine HP, 46 HP PTO, probably around 40 HP at the drawbar, 4000 to 5000 pounds:

Similar size or a little bit smaller than a JD A or an Oliver 77. I would go with a two bottom plow, so you can pull it in any and all conditions without needing extra ballast. It will take up less space in the shed, and will have fewer wear parts ( shares, shins and coulters ) that may need to be replace right away to get into good working condition. Look for one in the best condition with shiny moldboards. Some soils really stick hard to rusty plow moldboards that can not scour very well.

You will likely get about the same 1.3 acres plowed per hour using a little less fuel by pulling 2 x 16s at 4.5 mph and 10 percent wheel slip as you will pulling 3 x 14 at 3.5 MPH with 15 percent wheel slip.
