Woke up my1955 Case 400 Diesel with PSB American bosch yesterday, started up just fine idled reved up and down. Let it run for 10 minutes , moved it over to the shop to add hydraulic fuid check the gear lube and radiator before going to mow hay. Well Idled it down and it quit as it always does. Put in hydraulic fluid, checked the others, started up just fine headed for the moco, oops a low tire up front, idle down set the brake and go get the battery compressor(loveit) tractor dies, no problem. now it won't start, realize I had valve from tank in off position. Open it up bled at the bleeders, no start, no smoke, cracked the injector lines, getting some fuel not a lot??, tank topped off. now after cranking will get smoke and start, but ony runs momentarily the acts as if it runs out of fuel. wait abit and it will do the same. Help thanks gobble

Are you getting any fuel pressure? No fuel pressure means plugged primary or 2nd fuel filter or sheared pin in transfer pump. High pressure means the Final filter is plugged. It's actually a good sign it will run at all. That means that the shaft on the high pressure side is not sheared.

John Jocco, thank you for your responses. I still had some air in the system. I took an old inner tube and large hose clamp. Pressurized the fueltank, took the bleeder bolt out of the third filter up in front of valve covers, no fuel came out. Started the engine and then fuel was coming out, with the fan so close, and loving all my digits I thottle back the engine til it quit put the plug in then restarted the engine. Running fine now. I just plumb forgot I had shut off the fuel at the tank. Fortunate for me the American Bosch PSB will still operate this classic diesel tractor. Most of my mechanicing experience comes from trial and error and people like you two and others on this old tractor forum thank you all. gobble

I have used that old inner tube trick many times.

when running out of fuel I always crack every injector line at the inject open throttle Wide open,, crank with decompressor engaged ( no compression) until you get no more air bubbles then tighten lines she will start unless you never got all the air out of the final filter that can cause a air bubble that wont pass myself I avoid using air to bleed a dsl system unless thats my only choice,, it does introdcue air in the system

Case Nutty 1660; thank you for that bit of wisdon, I will say the tank was full clear up on the threads for the cap, between the air pressure and removing the plug in the final filter while cranking (which I beieve was the key),the magic happened. I appreciate all the wisdom you bring to us Case people on this forum. thanks gobble

I like what 1660 says but some systems are a pain to bleed. Not only fuel but hydraulic clutch , brake etc.

cranking while having bleeder screws open let air into the system but what ever works for you works for me, just stating what I have learned that system will bleed out with tank full to the top of the filler neck sitting on level ground,, just takes time :)

Case Nutty 1660, I probably was not patient enough after applying air pressure to the fuel tank, to wait for something to happen at the third filter bleeder plug. As you say, a full tank to the top has always worked before, it was being stubborn this time. thanks for your help gobble
