Kohler 10HP K241 Pricing

I have a 10HP Kohler on an air compressor and I'm thinking about converting it over to a electric motor. The Kohler was rebuilt a few years ago, bored over the next size, new piston, rings, valve job, new carb, etc. It was only used a few times. It starts right up and runs good. I'm planning to put the engine up for sale, but not sure what to ask for it. I look online and don't see many for sale and pricing is all over the place. Engine would be great for a older IH Cub Cadet tractor/mower. Any thoughts?
Thanks

I'm not much help, all of my Cub Cadets are of the 12 horse variety except for a 7 and a 14. The last 12 horse I bought was a complete 129 with hydraulic lift, tiller, mower deck, snow blower, sleeve hitch and front blade. Works good with a good running engine, paid $300 for the whole works. Not sure what an engine alone is worth.

One thing to keep in mind is that there were dozens of unique spec numbers for each of the K-series kohler engines that defined variations in crankshaft, oil sump/base plate, carburetor, air cleaner, exhaust, governor, starter, etc. A person would have to do their homework to see if your particular K241 engine was compatible with their application.

While there are dozens of combinations,a lot of them can be dealt with and adapted for different applications.Biggest to me has always been the crank configuration.A tapered crank engine on a generator isn't much good for anything else.Starter and stator charging system? Or,a starter generator setup?Remote throttle? And,while they've always been a pretty valuable engine, they seem to be falling by the wayside here.I have a new 8 HP electric start, with it's own control panel and gas tank.In 1986 I picked up a new lowbed for my boss, hauled it to our shop, brought it in and removed the pony engine that ran the hydraulics on the trailer. It's been in my shop since that day.I bought a new hydraulic pump and coupling for it,and never used it on a splitter. The little tractor guys seem to want to pay $50.for it.They all seem to want Predators that run quiet, and use half the fuel.

The Kohler engines were used in other products besides Cub Cadet with the lower HP John Deere lawn tractors being an example. If you want to make the big money you could try for 400 dollars but it may take a long time to sell. Lawn tractors seem to be one of those things where owners for the most part are not fussy as to an exact engine to replace an original with. The collectors are out there that want an original replacement but how long would you have to wait? As Keith and Brendon said spec in terms of engine features matters a great deal.

I have a 73 Wheelhorse with a 12 HP Kohler on it.It has been on this property since new.Never apart, and the original buyer that lived in front of me put an hour meter on it when he bought it new. When I tell people how many hours were on it when the meter quit they just call me a liar.I'd probably say the same thing too,so I don't tell anybody.I have a 76 Wheelhorse with a 16 HP Kohler, still runs great,no idea if that one has been apart,I've only owned it since 1996 or so.I have another 73 in the shed with a 14 HP Kohler, and an 82 with a 12.Those were for future use when the others wore out.I have a 16 HP on a Miller welder that is also a generator.I thought I would use that for power outages, but it is way too piggy on gas for that.I don't think I've started that one for about 15 years.

Soundds like between the two of us we have quite a few K-series! I have 6 of them in total. Gravely 5240 walkbehind with a K181, Cub Cadet 100 with the K241, Deere 212 and Cub Cadet 1200 with K301's, Ariens S-16H with a K341, and a Power King 2418 with the big K361.

I'm located near Houston, Tx. I'll try advertising locally, someone mentioned $400, I was actually thinking about $350, maybe I'll try higher and see if I get any hits. Shipping would not be cheap, as you know, that is one heavy engine.

As far as other applications like a Cub Cadet, reason I mention it is because I rebuilt and used to own a 104. The K241 on it was identical to what I have except in few things. Gas tank is different, my Kohler is rope pull start, so it would need the starter pulley, brackets, etc. Mine throttle is a fixed adjustable setup, same gov lever, carburetor is exactly the same, just different linkage setup on Cub.

About 6-7 years ago I bought a package deal of a complete Cub Cadet 123 and a 124, a 125 parts tractor, boxes of parts, attachments and running K301 for $400 if I remember right. Altogether I got 3 running K301 engines in the deal. Assuming yours has magneto ignition if rope start. You might get a fair price if you find the person who really wants that engine. Bad thing is that from what I've seen the demand for them is drying up. I see garden tractors with K series Kohlers, whether CC, JD or whatever brand, on our buy/sell site all the time for pretty big money, and they never sell. The ones priced at $300-$500 for a good running, operating and looking tractor sell fast, but the guys wanting $1,000 for a mediocre one have them listed for years sometimes. But then I'm usually buying complete tractors or a combination of tractors, parts, engines and attachments all to go so I may be getting them cheaper than if I were to just go looking for an engine.

For a used rebuilt engine I would not ask more than half the price of a new one.
