JD 60 radiator shutters

I've got a 1953 JD60 S/N 6023065 that I'm about to put the radiator back in. I put a new core in it and have it all sealed back up. (maybe I shouldn't have done that until this is answered?) It originally came with the shutter system for cooling, but that's long gone. I haven't done anything to the bottom tank and it's still got the shutter 'shaft?' in it. So I was wondering if anyone made an aftermarket system to put a thermostat in it? Anyone have any ideas on that? If not I'm probably going to put it together as-is and see what happens. Thoughts? Thanks.

Thanks BnD. When you say retrofit, do you mean find a later model housing that will fit my year model? Or is there a company that makes these? Thanks
I have a 50 with the same situation. I purchased a radiator top for a 520/530 with the thermostat. Drill a small hole in the thermostat so air will bleed out of the coolant.

Thanks Larson. I dunno if a different radiator top would work for mine. It's got an inlet that looks like a triangle shape to it. I was wondering if I could possibly separate the upper water pipe from the water outlet manifold on the engine and put a thermostat inside it. Hoping the O-ring inside it could hold a thermostat in. Hmm.....dunno. It's funny though; the LP gas version of the housing is built for a thermostat, but not on the gas models. Who knows, maybe I'll even cut a slit in the side screen in front of the radiator to put my own shutter in, but I doubt it.

I have an early JD50 with shutters. I flipped the shutter assembly upside down and use a control cable to adjust the airflow. I keep the coolant temperature around 180 degrees. I very seldom have to fool with the adjustment. It runs much better at 180 degrees. With the shutters open, the heat gauge will not move.

Well I'm glad that worked out for you. I don't even have the shutters anymore. I don't know if there's a replacement system that's better out there or not. World sure love to find someone that sells a retrofit system to install a thermostat. Know anyone?

Remove the factory fan and install an electric pusher cooling fan with a 195F stat should work .
Okay, that's interesting. Never installed something like that. If I remove the original fan, I'd have to keep the pulley to run the w/pump. I understand the concept of installing an electric pusher cooling fan. Not sure about where the 195F stat would be? I'm assuming I'd put a sensor in where the temp gauge sensor goes? So no need to install a 195F stat in the top radiator tube. And I'd have to ensure it has a 12v battery in it (which it does) to work. Hmm. In your experience where is the best place to shop for them and does brand of cooling fan make a difference? Thanks

I apologize - I missed your comment about not having shutters for your radiator. It was plainly stated, but I somehow managed to read around it.
