Ford 861 No Hydraulic Lift

Good morning all. New to the forum, looks like there is a lot of wisdom here.
I have a 1958 Ford 861 Powermaster that the three point lift gave up on while bush hogging. It was working fine when we started.
The tach failed at the same time. The tach is driven off of the hydraulic pump so is possible that I lost mechanical drive to the pump.
I've never been into the hydraulics on one of these, just looking for some insight before I start unbolting things.

Thanks

Todd

Best group for this question is on the Ford Forum. Below this Forum in the list.

That said, the Hydraulic pump is driven by a gear on the rear end of the cam shaft. Tac is driven off the back of the Hydraulic Pump.

There are several failure points in that drive train. E.G. Bolt holding gear onto cam. splines of gear on cam,
gear in pump, pump shaft. Plus other ones.
Mine failed at the gears that drive the Cam shaft. Those broke the Crank gear too. Engine quit in my case.

I would suggest you do a complete teardown of that pump and cleaning of the fluid in the hydraulic system.
The failure may well be caused by something in the fluid as there is no filter in that system.

I hope that helps.

You're on the right track, pull the pump and take a look. In my case I had a section of teeth broken off the DRIVEN GEAR as shown in the picture below. I rebuilt the pump and everything's been fine ever since.

Hello CT welcome to YT! While Andy have given you a snip of the what will be the likely area of focus for your repair I would recommend that you get a service manual if you don’t have one. Here is a link to the listing YT shows for your tractor, notice some of the manual are year specific. YT Ford 861 manuals
I will also add a link to the manufacturers online parts catalog for your tractor for additional reference. CNHI Ford 861 parts catalog

Thanks for the feedback!! I forgot my dad had given me an original service manual for this tractor. So I have done some reading and I think I'm ready to go. I'll be back when I see what parts I need.

Thanks again

Todd
