1655 won’t start

I purchased a 1655 at a auction and can’t get it to start. It’s a diesel so I drained the diesel and it smelled old put new filters on it with fresh fuel also checked metering valve in pump and it’s free. I cracked the injectors and cranked it over until I got fuel coming out but it dosent even try to start. It won’t even fire on either. The head looks like it’s been cleaned so I’m assuming it’s had some engine work done. I’m getting some whitish blue smoke while cranking but it won’t fire. Anyone have advice on what to try next?

Not firing on ether, does this mean you have none of the normal knocking and a raise in the cranking speed? Or meaning you expect it to start and run on diesel after a short ether blast? If the first scenario then compression (valves set to tight) or cam timing is off. If you are experiencing the second scenario, then pump timing could be suspect.

Either does not make an increase in cranking speed. Maby even slows the cranking speed. I wondering if the cam timing is off. I noticed that the engine is hard to turn also. As I stated in the first post looks like the head has been hit tanked and worked on so who knows what’s going on.

With the valve cover off bringing the engine onto “rock” of cylinder 6 should put you within 5 degrees of TDC of cylinder 1. Rock is exhaust valve has almost closed and the intake has opened an equal amount.
Also a compression test would be a good idea.
