JD 420U 2-Cylinder Oil Filter Assembly - MISSING PARTS?

I was changing the oil in this 1956 420U for a friend of mine (I've never worked on one of these before), and when I removed the case to access the oil filter, and I pulled the filter out, I did not have item #8 in this image ( Lower sealing plate). I also don't have item #21 either. I'm wondering if some of these parts are only present on certain versions of the tractor/engine, based on the serial number? I believe I have a 1956, with serial number around 80,000. I did find some evidence that they changed some things at the 100,000 mark in production.

I was able to locate the actual filter at my local JD dealership, but they said the items I may be missing are obsolete.

Am I truly missing some parts here, if I don't have items #8 an #21?

It looks like 24M7085 washer is the current substitute for M1304T. Did your dealer check that number?

The attached picture gives you some dimensions if you want to try to find a washer elsewhere.

Yes, you are missing part 8, sealing plate and 21, seal washer. What happened, these parts stuck to the bottom paper of the oil filter, and were thrown away with the filter. Yes, you need these parts. Where to get these parts, try Dave Cook Tractor Parts, Wisconsin. He works with parts for Dubuque tractors, as your JD 420. Call mornings, 715-373-2092.

You'll definitely want to get # 8 back in place so the filter is supported properly and has a chance of sealing.

Alternately, you can build one out of a piece of sheet metal and the appropriate size hole saws......that's what I did.

Also if you get the filter from Deere it won't come with the housing gasket, you need to purchase it separately. If you get the filter from NAPA or other sources it comes with the gasket.

With very rare exceptions. Every 40,420,430,440, 320 & 330 in the world has operated without filtered oil after the 1st oil change for up to 75 years .
