I've got 2 AR's...an unstyled '49, and a styled '50. I've picked up a JD 4D(?) on steel and a restored 44 on rubber. Had to make one new lever and repair the other one on the 4. Got it back together yesterday and just couldn't help myself...had to try it out. Problem is, here in Central Ne. there really is any open ground to try plowing on. But, I've got the old cattle corral with enough area I can at least try it out on. WOW, what a trip!! No pun intended.
Took me 3 rounds to get one good land started. Not polished of course but it's plowing alright. Had to pull out a couple of times, reset, readjust, back up and unplug, etc. But I now have one good land started. Wasn't sure that the trip mechanism worked when I started but that seems to be fine. Having throttle problems with my 49 so I have to work on that before I go again.
Now, it's probably been at least 55 years since I've plowed. Back then I was plowing with a 4010/4020. And I never had to set a plow...Dad had those set and set right! He'd had plenty of practice. Of course, those tractors had (1)foot clutches, (2)PS, (3)hydraulics, and (4)wheel brakes. I really missed those foot brakes! I took out the same post on one end 3 times reaching for those foot brakes!! Then when I didn't find the brakes I went reaching for the foot clutch. That's when you find out that your 72 year old reflexes aren't near the same as a teenager. But even with the problems, I absolutely had a ball! Surprisingly I didn't cuss about anything once, but I sure did laugh at myself plenty of times.
