Hitch for Allis Chalmers WD45

Hello and thanks in advance for the help. I bought a WD45, but the hitch assembly is missing. This is going to be a parade tractor and I was looking for something very simple that I could attach in order to pull a wagon. I noticed one time on an AC, a horseshoe shaped bar that connected directly to the final drive. Not sure if it was a WD45. Any suggestions / help is much appreciated.

Welcome to the forums.

The horseshoe drawbar was not used on the WD45 to my knowledge, it was used on some of the smaller tractors like the B and C. This drawing from the parts book will give you an idea of what is supposed to be there. You can see what you are missing for pieces to start with. Posting some pictures of what is on your tractor, could aid us in helping you.

Many thanks, Jim. I will get pictures posted today. I do have some of the pieces in the diagram, but pretty sure I don't have the snap coupler (receiver).

I am not sure about the WD45 but some WDs did not have the snap coupler, they had the pin hitch. Pictures of what you have will help.

That appears to be a pin hitch, not the snap coupler hitch, to me. I think all the parts are there. DrAllis may be along with other thoughts.

It looks like the tractor has a belly mower under it, that is likely why the drawbar hitch was removed.

It looks like you have the bent steel arm that goes up from the forward hitching bracket to the bottom of the hand clutch lever to disengage the hand clutch if a plow hits something solid. There would be a fork at the top that goes around the back side of the clutch lever and the bottom goes on pins that go through the forward hitch point.

Yes, I'm going to remove the belly mower and just wanted to get something attached that could pull a wagon. This will no longer be used with PTO implements. I think it may make a little more sense on how to connect the hitch once the belly is removed. Not sure I understand how the circled portion below connects or if it even needs to without a snap coupler.

Here are clips from pictures of the hitch in a WD operator's manual that should help you. I suggest you acquire the Operator's and service manuals for your WD45.

I have one, but I find it very difficult to follow. I'm one of those people that needs to see it done (just once), then I get it. Anyway, many thanks for the help everyone. I think I can figure it out. I'll post the finished product. Looks like I don't have the block, clevis and support, so might have to find that aftermarket.

No picture of the part you are questioning.

You do not need to install the PTO shaft or supports for the shaft as long as support of the shaft is the only purpose they serve.

You have those parts, everything you need to get the drawbar on it, outside of maybe some bolts, nuts and washers, is there I believe.

I would suggest you study the diagram in the last picture Jim sent. If I click on it, it enlarges. It shows how all the parts fit together. Many of the parts in your pictures are upside down, that is the part setting on the ground goes on the top and attaches to the tractor.

Is there a tried and true method for determining exact size and threading of missing bolts or is it mostly trial and error? Thanks!

Trial and error if you don't have the measuring tools and pitch gauges.

The holes in the brackets will be slightly larger than the cap screws/bolts needed. I think the 8 main cap screws to hold the two major brackets to the underside of the tractor may be 3/4"-10 TPI x 2" long grade 8, with lock washers and flat washers if shown in the drawings. I would recommend chasing the threads in the tractor housings with a cleaning/bottoming tap and putting a bit of blue Loctite on those 8 cap screws.

Just wanted to let you know that I pretty much pieced the drawbar section together and just need to pick up some missing bolts. Thanks again for the help. On another note, I'm struggling to find a local mechanic to work on things that I'd love to work, but simply don't have time for. I live in La Porte, IN., home of Allis Chalmers, and I can't find an AC mechanic anywhere. Know of some great JD folks but they aren't familiar with the AC models.

Get the correct AC manuals, those tractors aren't rocket ships. The same basics apply across all brands of that vintage.

Thanks, Jim. More a matter of time. It would be nice to have an outside option when I'm i a pinch.
The point is I don't see why a JD mechanic would be afraid of an Allis Chalmers. My guess is they have all the work they want, and don't want to take on more.
