Help with 7 hp Briggs and Stratton wiring problem

I have an Oliver 75 (same as Jacobsen or Ford 7 hp) garden tractor. The engine is a Briggs and Stratton 170707-1190-01. It had some wiring problems when I bought it and I am having trouble finding a wiring diagram for the engine. I need to find the correct start switch Jacobsen part number 130072. I would put the correct solenoid on if I could find one Jacobsen number 126070. I am also looking for the alternator, I found a parts book but I don't know which version of the alternator I need. I understand the Kohler engines but this is the first Briggs I have worked on. Thanks.

Wasn't that tractor originally powered by Tecumseh?
With older Briggs and Stratton alternators, it helps if you can tell us what color the plug from the stator is and what color the wires are that go to the stator plug. On some, there was a red and a white wire, On some, both wires were the same color. The stator is the wire coils that go under the flywheel and that is part of the alternator system. Some used a rectifier or regulator and some were such low amp they went directly to the battery without a regulator.
For a solenoid, you should be able to substitute an aftermarket one, you just need to know whether your solenoid has two small terminals or one small terminal.
For your ignition switch, look to see if the terminals on the back are marked. Some have the tangs stamped with a letter, some have the letters stamped on the insulation the terminals are riveted to on the back of the switch. If the terminals are labeled, perhaps a small engine shop could match it up to an aftermarket switch that is still available. That same small engine shop should be able to help you with your alternator.

I just went to Partstree.com and put in your engine model number. The parts list shows at least four different stators that could have been installed in your engine.

T.R.K. thanks for the information. The engine for the 1972 Oliver 75 was always a Briggs. I have done some more reading tonight and believe that stator (Briggs calls it an alternator) 393295 or 592830 is the one I need. This afternoon I found the switch that was on the tractor when I bought it and will check it over again, I replaced it because it seemed to be corroded inside.
