Lost my TO-30 this weekend

My completely refurbished TO-30 was running better than it ever had. Brand new tires, rims, carb, seals, fluids, electronic ignition, one wire alternator, etc.
I was bush hogging my hillside when I ran into a hornets nest. I was at the top of my hill and I was able to turn the key off before jumping off. The terrain was almost flat at the top but the bush hog must have bucked and kicked the tractor out of gear. 200 feet later it was laying on its top. Front end completely demolished (but repairable). It busted the casting at the starter so its hanging loose. Busted the casting on the other side too. Hard to look at after hours and hours of work. I don't think the casting is fixable, but everything else appears either still intact or fixable. From the gear shift on back is fine, even the bush hog.
I'm not sure whether to scrap it or try to locate parts. I'm moving up to a 4wd with high/low gear range as my terrain is very steep in places.

Don't sound right. Even assuming no over ride clutch, your brush hog should not kick out trans from gear, even with a badly worn gear box. Drive a non running tractor 3 yds fwd, maybe. Even marginal engine compression would then stop it. Any chance you freaked out and kicked the gear shift? Very, very important to secure your machinery! That's how people-bystanders get hurt. Perhaps why I am told modern mowers sport multiple interlocks on clutch, shifter, pto switch, even seats, et cetera. Bad day for a good little tractor. Better to suffer a extra 2 bee stings than have a 3,too lb machine run amock! I think they sell easy to operate zero turn mowers with seat belts and all for the Weekend Warriors. Safety starts and ends with the operator.

No, I reached down and turned the tractor off and jumped off. Ive been on this tractor for 20 years and ran into bees a few dozen times in the same area, usually yellow jackets not hornets. No freaking out, its just bees. I noticed the tractor kicked out of gear a couple times prior which was highly unusual but didnt think it was an issue. Anyway, the tractor is lost, all are safe. Yes, I'm aware of my surroundings and the risk taken on a steep hillside.
