Substitute for Type A transmission fluid

I'm looking for a good substitute for Type A
transmission fluid for a Hydraul shift on a 1655. Does John Deere have something that is compatible? Possibly something that will help oil seals.

Dexron III, or probably any Dexron. They're all supposed to be backwards compatible. I ran Dexron III in my 1655. I just bought whatever was cheapest at Walmart.

Seems like I read on here where someone used Hy Trans? In the over and under?
How would that work?

Yes, some guys have used a hytran in the two/three speed. I believe they switched to that recommendation after the White changeover.

White recommended changing to hytran in 1977 in the larger tractors because of bearing failure from the thin ATF. I tried it in the two speed on two four digit Olivers and they slipped.

I've switched to good hydraulic oil in all mine when I change. 1655 was having a small issue holding in direct and maybe OD. When switched to hydraulic oil seems to have fixed that.

dex3 in every unit i've ever owned. never a prob w O/D clutch, U sprag, [or bearing] wear, but i've rebuilt a couple for other reasons. i change the oil & filter every 200-250h.

I use marathon 577 hydraulic/trans oil in my 1750 2 speed, 1850 3 speed, and 2-135 white. The 1750 got switched probably 20 years ago or more when dad was using the cheap hy-trans oil from tsc, but it's been fine since. The 1850 I bought one and rebuilt it with all new clutches. You should be good with deere hygard, or case hytran oil.

A good 10-30 base Trans Hydraulic oil works fine. Same in the hydraulic reservoir. As the pumps wear, and clearances show wear, the thicker oil will maintain pressure at high operating temps.

As farmersamm posted, you are not actually buying “A” fluid. You might be buying an acceptable substitute that works fine, but it’s not “A”. Here’s how the oil industry works: When a certain type of oil gets a spec antiquated or “put to bed”, production after that can have anything in the container. It might meet the former oil spec and it may not. I’m not just talking about your “A” spec, I’m talking about all different specs. So some of these oil bottlers will put “A” on the container, but there is no more “A” spec to meet. The bottler is just doing it to make money. The stuff you are buying from convenience stores (that, to me, is a red flag) probably isn’t a name brand oil, is it?

I remember being in a bargain store one time and they had for sale, 10w 30 oil rated SA. I did not know that was possible.
