no oil pressure

I have a fresh complete rebuild on my 800 Ford Tractor 172 cu in Engine. I have oil flow out the port to the guage, but no pressure to the guage. I installed a new oil pump while the engine was being assembled. What creates pressure with the pump? Thanks Max Harmon Sr

Pressure is created by resistance to flow. Just like holding your thumb over the end of a garden hose. The less area you give for water to escape, the higher the pressure.

First, if you have no oil pressure, shut the engine off. DO NOT RESTART until you find and solve the problem.

Remove the distributor. Use a drill with 1/4” socket to drive the pump. You will feel some resistance in the drill IF the pump is moving oil. The resistance will increase as you speed up the drill.

Then remove the oil filter. Run the drill. Is there flow?

Remove the valve cover. Have someone rotate the engine with a wrench. Watch for oil flow on the rocker arms.

Try a new gauge or test the old gauge using air.

See how those things are.

When you rebuilt the engine. Did you install the correct seal gasket that I have circled. In the last Gasket set I got it was not in it and I tried a seal I had sitting around and it Did not seal and I had no pressure. Had to get one from the Dealer

Hello Catman, welcome to YT! A “complete rebuild” can mean a lot of things. Was it “complete” to the point of the block was taken to a machine shop and cleaned? If so during this process machine shops remove the plugs on the oil galleys aka oil passages. If you got it back and wasn’t aware of this that could very likely be where the oil flow is going. Since the open hole has very little restriction the pump cannot build pressure. I don’t know the exact configuration of that Ford block but the missing plug would have to be on the front of the engine behind the front gear cover or down in the pan/crank area. If the plug was missing in the back of the engine you would have an external leak from the clutch area.
