Some speculation:
How low was the fuel in the tank? Let's say it was low and you had tank rust and your filter screen on the tank outlet had a good amount of rust in it. You were consuming fuel at some rate and the engine but wasn't getting enough to keep running......I have been there with my Ford 3000.
You said you checked for fuel at several places and got some positive responses.....yes BUT how much?
You put in a new battery and started getting positive results.....engine spinning enough to cause the little amount of fuel getting to the injectors to explode but not enough fuel to support the engine running on its own.
Having BTDT I went directly to the outlet of the fuel tank because I was trying to finish a job knowing that the fuel in the tank was low and removed it, cleaned and reinstalled it, put in about 5 gal. of diesel, primed up everything and lit it off. Worth a try if nothing else works.
