IH 706 TA stuck - Tricks for getting it free? Serial: 43727 S-Y

History: I borrowed this machine from my Dad. He wasn't big on maintenance. I do recall him and Mom having a heated discussion about rebuilding or swapping the engine. The final decision was to swap. It has C-301 engine! Which I see is a REALLY nice upgrade. I noticed when it started it sounded really strong and smooth. You all know that sound. The one that gives you goose bumps and makes you giggle. Geez, I really love old iron.

The Problem: Unfortunately the TA seems to be stuck. When I pull on the lever, the linkage just flexes and nothing moves. I watched the video from a "just a few acres farm" which was very informative but I have to get it moving to make any adjustments. I will be searching You Tube but I always appreciate your input.

Is the flexing only in the lever such as the pivot of the lever is froze? If not the pivot points of lever 11 and 15 in the linked diagrams are suspect. CNHI Farmall 706 TA controls diagram When you push the clutch does a red light on the dash come on? Check the tractor for a functioning high TA (Direct) Drive the tractor in L3 or L4 down a slight incline speed it up to over 1/2 throttle then move the throttle back to idle noting if the engine is providing braking to the movement of the tractor, as in slowing it down. If you find it does not the tractor is being driven by the TA low side sprague or “one way clutch” meaning the hydraulic applied Hi or “Direct” clutch is not working. This would essentially tell you that the TA is not functioning and likely trying to free the linkage is probably a waste of time unless you intend to split the tractor and repair the TA.

Well the T/A shift linkage is pretty simple . you have the rod that runs down from the handle to a bell crank then a rod that goes forward to the bell crank on the M C V that moves the spool valve up and down . Now if by chance the first bell crank is hoked up wrong ?????? this could be the issue ???? or if the spool valve is bound up ?????? . The spool valve SHOULD move up all the way and go down all the way to the SNAP RING and touch the spool valve nut . PICTURES WOULD HELP HERE as i am nowhere close to see for myself. P/S your going to need a muich larger fuel tank with the 301 and also your going to have other issues with it so be perpaired .

I will give it a try. Thanks!

The spool valve seems to be stuck. It don't even wiggle.

If you unhook the linkage at the spool valve, you can’t move it up or down???. If you can’t move it then remove the retaining nut . It has two flat sides to turn it . The spool valve is two piece maybe the pin that connects the two pieces is broken and has the spool jammed up

Thanks! I'll check it out.
