replace New Holland 851 round baler conveyor sprocket

I need to replace the upper conveyor sprocket on a New Holland 851 chain round baler. The old sprocket is removed. I have released the tension on both sides of those heavy chain tensions. I still cannot get the new dust shield and sprocket in place. Do I need to open the chamber door? Is so, how much? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You open the tailgate enough to slide a 4x4 or 6x6 over the hydraulic cylinders and let it down to rest on those. Not sure if anything else , it’s been awhile since I ran one of those

We would open the gate a bit, push in those chain guides in the rear so the chain can drop to the floor, and close the end gate some. If its the way top sprockets, we would chain to either side of the sprocket on the bars and lift the chain up with the loader. If it is on the swing arm, we would do similiar. Each sprocket takes a little different techinique , but most involve using the loader and a chain. Sometimes we would also use cable winches to pull the tension arm down enough to loosen the tension to get to the sprockets. We don't use them much anymore, but they are the back up plan, when the belt baler give us grief. Dad bought the first on in 81 and we have picked up several over the years if the price was right, simple reliable balers.

Thanks for the advice. Do I still need to open the gate and prop with a 4x4 as mentioned previously or can I use the loader and chain approach without opening the gate? The sprocket I need to change is the one on the swing arm.

Yes propping the gate open takes tension off
