4000 SU Serial Number??

Finally scratched off to see the serial number, & now I'm confused! Stamped on the "flat spot" is 9L26B on top w/AF7023 underneath. I can't find (yet) any mention of such a number. Would someone translate it for me?

Thread 'Ford 4000 SU ??????'

Trying to figure out what i have, was told Ford 4000. I have enclosed a couple pictures. Wondering if it a 3000 grill or 4000 grill. From what I have read the SU used some 3000 parts.

9L26B is the date code for when the transmission was assembled, which was November 16, 1969. AF7023 is an assembly code for the transmission, which only means something to the Ford Engineers.

I checked the other side for a number & found the flat surface already scraped clean, but no numbers at all!

Check on the under side of the right side hood panel, up above the battery when you open the hood. The original foil sticker might still be there. If it is, post the numbers that you find there.

Yes, plus the date code you found on the transmission 9L26B is Nov 26, 1969. Check for date codes on the other major parts of the tractor and see if they are close within a few months. It's possible you have a replacement transmission and the codes were not transferred.

I can see the corner marks where the sticker has been taken off.

On the right side of the engine block, down below the large raised casting numbers (casting code should have 6015 in the middle) on the flat rail just above the oil pan should be the engine serial number and a date code for the final assembly of the engine. If you can find those, post them back here.

The D at the beginning of the engine serial number indicates that the engine was built for the 4xxx series, and therefore should be a 201 ci engine. To the right of that engine serial number should be a date code for when the engine was assembled.

The fact that there is no model or serial number info on the transmission does indicate that it is most likely a replacement transmission. The dealer that did the trans swap was supposed to stamp the new trans with the original info, but that did not happen all of the time.

Definitely looks like a 4000SU to me. It's got the radius rod front axle and steering from the 2000/3000 series and the double reduction rear axle with the inboard wet brakes from the 4000 series.

No more numbers there, but I found several other numbers -
LB4110 DA10B in the trans/rear end flange on top of the rear end case.
9K15 C5NN & 501K on the rear end case
N51 & 9L4 both on the trans case
J30 Rt Rear axle
9K25 Lt Rear axle

I know some are date codes. I would just like to know what year I should call this tractor?????

Since you already found a stamped code of 9L26B on the transmission for November 26 1969, the codes 9K15 (Oct 15, 1969), 9L4 (Nov 4, 1969) and 9K25 (Oct 25, 1969) fit right in. I would say the final assembly date would be late 1969 or early 1970.

According to TractorData the 4000SU was made 1970-76, so can I assume it's a 1970??? Thanks!!!

Don't always believe tractordata.com. According to my references, the 4000SU was made for the entire production run of the 3 cylinder 4000 series, from 1965-1975. I have no idea where tractordata came up with 1976 as the final year for the 4000SU. Any 1976 SU model would have been a 4600SU from the next generation 4600 series. If I was a betting man. I would bet that your tractor was assembled in late (November or December) 1969, although at that point it would have been made for the 1970 model year. Not much changed from late 1969 to early 1970 on the 4000SU model anyway, except maybe the power steering pump was changed from the older style with the reservoir up above the pump body to the style with the reservoir integrated into the pump body.
