What is the easiest way to clean out the airfilter assembly on a two-cylinder John Deere?

I don't think the model is relevant since all Donaldson oil filter on the model with the rear engine seem pretty much the same, but the point remains.

For reference using this photo I am referring to the big middle part of the assembly, it's a cylindrical seam welded tube that is welded shut on both ends with a mesh of wire however that creates a problem with cleaning it out after many years what would be the best way to go about it? I contemplated soaking it in degreaser but since I can't dry out the inside which is bare metal I run the risk of it rusting which i don't want.

What do y'all think?

You could dunk it in a bucket or large drain pan of mineral spirits, agitate it a few times and let it sit for a couple days. The mineral spirits has a "protective effect" so I wouldn't worry about rust.

With bottom removed I use the hotsy turned up on low to medium pressure from both ends. If you don’t have a hotsy find a local car wash.

I have boiled a few in a turkey deep fryer with degreaser and dish soap, take it out, rinse with more boiling water and blow out the best you can with a compressor. Never have had a problem with rust! 🤷‍♂️
