Price of day-old baby calves

I heard they were getting $1500 each to raise for feed lots. Sounds silly high to me. I see new calve barns going up that take 200 to 400 at a time. I was told of a farmer around Hicksville Ohio that has a 4000 head setup.

I have a friend in North central Pennsylvania who has Amish neighbors who are doing the exact same thing. The $1500 price was mentioned to me.

Been there for a while now. One of the guys in the tractor club told me on the 4th that his neighbor sells a load of fats every week and buys a load of calves, was paying $2500 for dairy/beef cross deacons. That's the highest I've heard. He swears up and down it's true. I'd heard $1800 over the winter, but $2500 was a new one on me.

Apparently there’s people that don’t know that has been the price for a year due to the low herd numbers caused by various things over the last 10 years. They’ve been loading those $1500 calves on airplanes in Pa and flying them out west for awhile now. I’ve pretty much made my mind up due to several circumstances to cash in on my cattle this fall, $3-4000 calves and $4-5000 cows gonna be a good chunk of money.

That's also what is making growing a herd size so difficult. Losing just one calf is a hard hit.

I just checked Monday's report from the local sale barn. Dairy/beef deacon, 75 to 110 pounds, $11 to 19.50 a pound. So a 110 pound calf at $19.50 would be $2145.

In this part of the world, many of the large dairy farms are breeding the top portion of their herd to sexed Holstein semen to get heifer calves, and the lower portion of the herd to sexed beef semen to get bull calves. They have arrangements with beef growers to take the crossbred calves directly from the farm.
