New to me farmall 826 question.

I just bought an 826 at auction that wasn't running when I looked at it. Question is when the tractor is running it leaks a bit of hydro oil out of the bottom where the trans brake cover is, between these two covers. Is this just a gasket issue or is something leaking internally that is causing this?

Hello GHF, welcome to YT! It is likely the transmission input seal leaking, you can pull the narrow two bolt cover off to look in there. That cover is the dry machine clutch inspection plate.

Are you talking about the plate with 2 bolts or the plate with a lot of bolts?

Can you clean it off and see exactly which cover is leaking?

I couldn't tell where it was coming from without taking the plate with two bolts off to look inside the clutch and it looks like it is coming from the motor side of that housing. So in front of the clutch. Would that be the main seal on the crankshaft?

Yes, leaking in front of the clutch would most likely be the rear main seal.

Does the oil leaking match the consistency and color of the engine oil? Probably does, and that confirms your answer.

Is it a fast leak or a slow drip?

Faster leak. Only happens when it is in gear while moving. It can idol and have clutch in or out and it doesn't have much of a leak.

Welp , looks like most of them . In time the PTO , main hyd pump the M C V pump and the tractor unless the T/A if so equiped is in good working order will just up and stop dead in it's tracks . The issue is the I D P T O input and the pressure plate for the main clutch is almost on it's last legs . THE IDPTO drives off a hub in the pressure plate and it has ware allowing it to flop around and cause the seal leak . the splines on the input shaft are wore just as bad as the pressure plate splines , this also reaks havoc on the bearing compounding the issue . This repair will requier a split at the bell housing and a new clutch a flywheel regrind new bearings two seals the new IDPTO input shaft along with bearing for it . This is not unusual for a tractor that has done hours of PTO operation . My own 806 has the same issue at this time . My 806 does all the feed grinding , manure hauling ,hay cutting , and hay raking and bale wrapping . Every job it does now is PTO related and most demand every pony it can shove thru the PTO . For me this will be the third clutch job since 1994 two because of this leak and one from pulling the center out of the clutch disc while hauling silage wagons . In my younger days this was a four and a half hour job .

If the crank seal is leaking then i would be dropping the pan and taking a look at the main bearings . I H crank seals usually don't leak unless ya have issues on the mains. . engine oil usually shows black , IDPTo seal leak can mock rear main seal leak due to clutch and flywheel dust mixing in .

Clutch housing leaking oil… I always change engine seal, clutch, pressure plate, resurfacing of flywheel, pilot bearing, release bearing, both front seals and oring of transmission, ipto shaft if any sign of wear and bearing. Remove the lower cover of the transmission to replace the transmission brake, cover gasket, and shaft oring. ( like doing a job twice?? not me)

Well when ya pull the flywheel to reface you will see if the crank seal is leaking . Ya know i have never had to replace a trans bake pad YET . last rear main seal was on a 1086 way back . it went down with the IDPTO out . Where that one went down to get it out of that field way back in the old strip mine ground was a nightmare . With no steering and no brakes no way of dragging out on a chain . No wrecker could get back in we had to load it on my goose neck and then drag my truck and trailer up over one spoil bank that had a one D 9 Blade cut along the side of the cut at about a 60 degree With my806 and his 756 pulling my 88 Ford F 350 4x4 . Once up on top ya had about a mile across the top of the leveled spoil bank then what goes up must come down one of the old dozer ramps just about as steep and now the pull tractors became holdem back tractors slippen and sliding on the loose shale

With the flywheel off I’m like why do I wanna chance that old seal is gonna give up the ghost any day. Can’t believe you have never replaced the transmission brake. Just had a 966 where the lining on the brake was completely gone and the metal arm was scraping the gear. I drill the arm and install the new style pad on the arm from hy capacity. Sounds like you give that old Ford a good workout

NO i have never replace one i still have two pads from my first order from Hy Cap when i became a dealer . Yes i look at eveyone when i have the cover down . . Now as to the OLD Ford , i bought used out of the bushes in S/W Pa a X oil field refugee with a hard 62000 miles on it , leaking rear wheel seals every U/joint out needing tire shocks brakes turn signals did not work and a issue with the computer , she was 460 powered . I know the 385 block fords inside and out . And what ya can do with them . She had the five speed and 4.10 gear and traction loc rear . Being a OLD Ford master tech we can FIX IT , yea let the nightmare begin . I would fix and it would take a dump , fix again and the same issue came back . Solved the rear wheel seal issue by doing them MY WAY NOT FORD WAY . Changed cam timing by going back to 1970 chain and gears as the cam it's self was the same cam used when they first came out , bumped the ing. timing to 36 total degrees at 2000 and i had the truck for several months and one of Fords NEW parts drop kicked me and i had to go to the dealer to get a new part and i was talking to the parts manager who i have known since 1964 when i built my first F E block monster and Bob and i were in a discussion when the Service manager came up to me and said what's your problem in a tine i did not like , i have a vary short fuse and i unloaded on him backing him into a corner as he did not know me and BOB was waving his hand like don't tick him off . Be backed off and asked to see this nightmare truck . he wrote down the S/.N and typed it into the Ford computer and it started printing out page after page of recalls then the hot line rings and a person from Ford was calling asking why he was looking into this truck as they have been tryen to find it to do these recalls and they could never find it and they asked if the paint was coming off of it yep in sheets at speeds over 55 MPH . So the offered to FIX everything for FREE and repaint the whole truck . I got the truck back looking better then new . BUT we still had issues with the computer , as she would just die when ever it wanted to . I picked the truck updrove it back to my shop put my custom mad 9 foot flat bed back on and the next morning i hooked to the trailer and loaded a tractor to haul up just south of I 90 on 193 . Pulled into the barn yard shut the truck down unloaded the tractor got everything picked up and put away jump in truck turn key and NO Start DOA . grab mounted cell phone call dealer , dealer send Wally head mechanic with new computer Wally install new computer we both go back to the dealer pull truck in shop with trailer still hooked shut truck off try restart nothing DOA . Install computer #3 truck start and we go home , truck runs for a week i am down south at the one auction lot shut truck off truck no start Wally makes the trip we put computer #4 in that one lasted three weeks . Ford sends big guy down , big guy has new and improved update , stuffs that one in lasted three four days . We went for a 88 computer to a computer for a 89 then to a 90 computer and they were still tryen to figure out what was causing this issue So to keep me going i carried a SPARE computer behind the seat along with two sets of U/Joints a clutch master cylinder and a spare clutch slave. We did figurre out why this truck was such a problem once when we were looking up a part for the emission system and by the Emission code on the door piller you used that code for the parts list in the book and it came under parts list 666 , no kidding . When it ran it ran vary well had big time getty up and go it even did well on fuel mileage Dragging my 28 footer empty i could pull down 14-14.5 loaded most times as long as i did not try and haul two BIG tractors putting me way overloaded 10-12 . I put 287thow and change on it and sold it to a farmer in western Ohio. . It was a nice driving truck had the best headlights of any i have had as we spent a lot of long nights driving home from sales . I then bought a used Dodge 3500 Cummins 4x4 and shortly after things in farming started down hill around here the small dairys started dropping like flys and ya need customers to keep the light on . Equipment sales tanked , people started wanting me to Carry them and when the milk check is not coming anymore we are not going down that road. So i closed up the shop and went hauling oversized and trust me this paid a lot more a lot . Now retired off the road and i will do some for my close friends .
