ISO Deutz Fahr 490 needles

I think there was a dealer in Alabama that sold parts for them
Thanks, I'll do a search down that way. Any of the dealers up this way hit a "discontinued" roadblock. I found a supplier in Germany that has them but won't ship to the US. I heard that when Kubota bought out Kneverland (who was actually the manufacturer), they discontinued all parts prior to 2000 or so model years.

Deutz dealers can still get parts for those balers. Those Deutz/Fahr balers were very popular everywhere else outside North America, and very, very well-built balers. We bought one on a whim as second backup baler about 10 years ago, but it pretty soon became our main baler. Both our New Hollands have been parked and never made it out of the barn for the last few years

Plenty of Deutz dealers around North America - any of them should be able to look them up and order for you. Here in Ontario I get my Deutz square baler parts from Minto Ag. I'm not sure who owns who now, but a few years ago (maybe even still for all I know) the Deutz/KHD group had bought Kubota (or vice-versa - can't remember) and did a great job of combining all their spare parts inventories. And although the Kubota dealers never knew it nor figured it out, if you knew the new Kubota part number that replaced the Deutz number you could actually order the Deutz parts from any Kubota dealer. I did that a few times: The Deutz dealer is a couple hours away from me, but the Kubota dealer is right up the road. I called the Deutz dealer, got them to give me the new cross-reference part number when I gave them the original part number from the parts manual, then called the Kubota dealer and ordered that new part number. They always got quite confused when the part arrived In a Deutz package from their Kubota warehouse, but I just told them not to worry about it.

But before you go to any of that trouble: It's pretty common to weld those needles. Just need someone who's good at welding aluminum, and you probably need to adjust the position of it with respect to the twine discs once done. Make sure you fix the plunger stop: There's no way those needles can get broken if the plunger stop is working as it should. Probably a case of a rusted-out stop spring (pretty common).

Dan, I tried two different Deutz dealers here in NY and got the same answer from both (discontinued/unavailable). That said, we are just across the creek from Prescott, Ontario, maybe I'll find a dealer over on your side that can get them. I have welded many a cast needle but not equipped to weld aluminum but, having these welded as we speak. I have been a local baler "go to" guy for 50 years and the first thing I do when one comes into the shop is to check the plunger dog. This one belongs to a neighbor.

Hmm, if the needles are discontinued then it's probably the same case here in Canada. Too bad. I'm always paranoid about breaking a set since my uncle blew apart a set on one of our New Hollands rather spectacularly. About 5 years ago I priced out a set for our Deutz and they were still available. But in my case I didn't by them because they cost a fortune (one of the few problems with Deutz equipment). I figured if I ever broke a set, I'd either weld them, or draw them up in CAD and have the profile cut on the plasma table at work out of heavy aluminum plate and have the groove/hole machined in the back. But thus far I've been ok. But I'm paranoid about them since I learned what they cost, and always double/triple check make sure my plunger stop is doing what it should.

You might try some wrecking yards, and you might have better luck here in Ontario (or Quebec) than down in the States. There seems to have been a lot more Deutz equipment imported into Canada around that time than there was to the US. Probably through some Quebec dealers, because there used to be (and to a lesser extent, still are) some more independent/European-minded dealers in Quebec. Up here on Marketplace or Kijiji there's always one or two HD-series balers for sale nearby.

Try this dealer they are located in N.C.
