Need help with generator and voltage regulator 71 Ford 3000 diesel.

I’d like to think I’m a smart guy but the generator setup is stumping me. I know I can convert to a GM 1 wire alternator but I really want a working proof meter.


I purchased a brand new generator, 6 pin voltage regulator, wiring harness and tach cable from Yesterdays tractors. On the new generator there are no markings on terminals. My voltmeter shows continuity from every terminal to the case as well as each other. In my head I feel thats not right.

I would assume the large spade is 12v out to D terminal on regulator.
The small terminal is field to the F on voltage regulator.

Can you all explain how this should be wired? Do I need to polarize the new generator? If so what terminals do I use. Tractor has a 1000A ground disconnect if that matters.

Both F (Field) and D (Dynamo = Armature) have their ends connected to ground (case), therefore continuity to case and between themselves.
