MF 275 Power Steering Pin Removal

Well as usual, planned to do some maintenance on my MF275. New power steering pump, seals for the cylinder, new oil.. What could go wrong?

Again, as usual, the power steering pin the links the cylinder ram to the casting just doesn't want to leave. It "had" threads on top, so I have been mangling these in various misguided attempts to extract the rusty little bugger. No Joy. Get a cutting torch to try heating the cast up and break the rust. Any one have any better ideas??? I am tapped out!

Just because it's a 275 doesn't mean there is only one option for a power steering cylinder. No one knows what you have or exactly what pin you're fighting with. More details might get you better results.

On another note, sometimes I have better luck not removing the entire cylinder, just the rod end. Take it apart on the tractor, remove the rod/piston unit and repair that as needed.

I agree with Harry, details help as there can be several differences with the same model of any tractor. There were several versions of the MF 275 and several build locations around the world which change things. And there are serial number breaks withing those. Pictures often help as well.


Right now, I am going to guess you have the steering cylinder of the type in the picture below. If so the threads on the pin were to be used as a puller. A washer or two (center slightly larger than the pin diameter) under the nut. Tightening the nut against the washers pulls the pin up. It might take several rounds of tighten, add washers, tighten and repeat. Good penetrating oil and heat may be required to get it out.

Hi Harry, Jim,

The 275 I have is pretty standard and your picture is close. I have a metal tab that is bolted down over the top of the pin. There was no nut on the pin and no other retaining device i.e. spring pin or cotter pin. Just drops down thru the shaft end and holds it. I did try the washers and a nut a few times, however, the rust beat the threads next step will be to square it off. PB Buster, WD40 and Crayons don't seem to sink it. Took an air gun and vibrated the crap out of it. 40+ years of rust is laughing! Going to get a torch and try to really heat up the casting. My little number doesn't touch it....
