What happened to pickups??

I'm starting to search for little newer pickup.
My 2013 runs good but is showing more rust than I like
I want a Chevy/GMC 2500, 4X4, gas -STANDARD CAB 8' bed.
Have been looking at several auction sites.
They're like unicorns.
What happened to them. Have looked at a hundred or more online and found only 3 or 4 with a STANDARD CAB and 8' bed
WTH ?
Do all you guys have extended cab trucks?
I would be happy with the plainest Jane, low mile pickup -from a no rust zone.
It has me wondering what people use an extended cab, short bed 3/4 ton for.
Done whining now...
By the way, I've seen a couple in the Washington DC/MD/VA area. How much snow/salt/rust do they get there?
Photo shows a 2018 that I would be happy with.

I agree, a regular cab with an 8 foot box is rare and what I want also.

My 2009 Ford F150 ( with currently 60K miles) is about as plain as you can get. Regular cab, crank windows, smaller 4.6 engine, no cruise control. My truck was also owned by Uhaul for the first 10K miles.

P/Us have been the new Merican' 4 door "sedan" for a long time at this point.

You probably need to look for "commercial" P/Us to find what you are looking for.

I bought new 2 door 8' ones thru commercial sales at my last company. Also bought a couple used ones from Fastnal and Enterprise Commercial rentals.

Avoid used vehicles from Maryland, not only salt but chloride brine. Even if you wash undercarriage after any kind of winter storm everything and every place will be covered with corrosive brine and salt.
I've got a plain jane 97 F350 with manual 5 speed, 7.3 diesel, bench seat, regular cab, crank windows, with 72000 miles sitting in the driveway with rusting out bed. I had to order it through commercial sales department at the Ford dealership. Manager wanted half down before they would order it because they didn't want to get stuck with it if I backed out

Looked for ten years to find a descent truck to replace my 98 fi150 . Found the 2011 GMc 3 miles from my house .
Got to be patient if you want a good one in northeast Ohio. Just my experience.

GSA auctions also. One of our Gov P/U's is a regular cab 8' bed F150. The other is a crew cab 8' bed F250.

I got away from standard cabs years ago. I like the space of an extended or crew cab for storing things such as jackets, extra clothes, tools I dont want exposed to weather or eyes, and occasionally people.

I lucked out 2 years ago and got a 2017 Ram 2500, 4wd, straight cab, 8 ft bed from Messick's in Mt Joy Pa. was one of the managers trucks, not beat-up, but I don't like the dial on the dash to shift gears, or push-button transfer case for hi lo. It passed Md inspection with only replacing wiper blades, so I guess I did alright. They are out there but it takes time to find one. Seems like a truck is more of a status symbol then a utilitarian vehicle, these days.

Standard cabs would make up a small fraction of pickups made in the past ten years. And used 3/4 ton pickups are always in demand. So you'll have a tough time finding a standard cab 2500 at the price you're willing to pay.

Meanwhile, I've heard that GM is phasing out its extended cab ("double cab") pickups, meaning most of its production will go to crew cabs. I plan on keeping my 2017 double cab 2500HD for a long time.

Search for the "Work Truck Package". That is what the dealers call it when you are buying a new truck so maybe it could be used when you check pre-owned trucks too....

So the truck is a 2016 F150 supercab with a 6.5ft. bed. And a toolbox takes up some of that.
There are times I miss the 8ft bed, but have a couple trailers I can hook to if the length is needed.

I lucked out and came across a replacement for my 99 F250 SD. It had 248K and the bed liner was holding the bed together. A '15 with 37K on it. FX4 off road and towing package. I only put 2000 miles a year since I retired and way more truck than I really need but a good deal. Just wish there was more room behind the seats for stuff.

I didn't know if I'd like it, but the longer cab is nice. Mine isn't the full four door, but it has the suicide doors on the back. Like RobCons said, plenty of inside storage. I've got jumper cables, tow strap, ratchet straps, cattle canes, receiver hitches, all kinds of stuff in there out of the weather.

Nothing better.
There are seat covers in there, the dogs just rearrange them.
Had a nephew meet me at a store parking lot once, he said he knew it was my truck by the nose prints on the windows.
You can either have really nice clean stuff, or you can have dogs.
We prefer dogs.

I found a work truck - single cab, 8ft bed, rubber floormats, vinyl seats - paid a ridiculous amount of money for it, put a tool box and bed cover on it, and STILL have to haul a trailer to fetch stuff about half the time.

I just bought a new leftover 2025 Ram 2500. Standard cab, 8' body. Was about the same price as a new 2026 1500. Has a fair amount of storage space behind the seats. 6.4 hemi, lots of power, does everything easy. Higher than necessary, had to get a drop hitch so my trailer wasn't pointing up to the sky. Has a $2300 option package, most of which I could care less about but it was there. Would have got a 1500but they don't make them with standard cab and 8' body, at least not Ram.
