1550 bull gear pinion removal

I replaced the leaking seal last year but it's dripping oil again. I cleaned the shaft best I could but it's in there pretty deep and hard to see. I think the sealing surface is bad. Can the pinion shaft be pulled out with the housing without disrupting the differential? From the parts book it looks like the differential shaft rides inside the inner ends of the bull pinions so taking one side off it will be supported by the other side. I want to take it out to repair or replace if needed.

Sounds like a deep situation project... Good luck. GG

Let us know what you figure out so it's archived will you?
Been studying the parts manual and I&T. It looks like it will come out with the brake housing. What I'm wondering is will the differential fall with one side out. Like the Cockshutts the diff has a shaft pressed in and the ends go into the bull pinions on both sides. So I'm hoping it will stay in place. My real concern is the Thrust bearing and its washer staying in place on the shaft. What I dread is draining all my new gear lube to get in there. I'll take some pictures along the way. Got to check with Smitty to see if he has one or possibly polish it up. Try Losey's videos too.

Not sure on a 1550, but if its anything like a 88 you will need to wrap a nylon sling or something around the diff to support it while you pull the pinions/shafts. I swapped them from side to side on a 88 recently as the drive side was worn pretty bad. On the 88 it is not that difficult to do/pretty much self explanatory, and I would imagine the 1550 would be similiar?

Thanks Tom. I'd guess they could be similar but since you were swapping sides they would both be off. I'm only doing one side.
