Ford 3 cylinder diesel timing

So after the discussion on my previous thread everyone was extremely helpful and I decided to bite the bullet and buy a replacement injection pump. It’s kind of a stab in the dark with the part number pump I have. So next problem is timing the replacement pump. The previous owner swapped the motor with another one and have no info on what it was from or year. It is in a L785 skidsteer. The block numbers come back to a 4600 series tractor I have gathered. I ordered the same model number pump that was on it. The old pump was seized and broke the head and rotor shaft and is why I am replacing it. It also looks like someone has replaced the injectors at some point probably trying to get it running not knowing the injection pump was broken. I was told the pump that was on this engine now is what was off the old engine so who knows. Now I have no idea if someone has messed with the injection pump gear and may have got it out of time. I have it down to pulling the crank pulley then the timing cover. Do I just rotate the engine until both valves are closed on cylinder one and the crank and cam gear marks should line up? I assume if they do then the injection pump gear can be retimed?

If you do pull the front cover don't be surprised if NONE of the gear marks line up. SOME engines have an odd number tooth count so the marks ONLY align about 1500/2000 engine revolutions. I would try hard to get it going WITHOUT pulling the front cover.

That sounds like a plan. I figure when the new pump comes in I will put it in and see what happens.
 
A 4600 series diesel engine should have a CAV rotary pump. If the pump is timed properly to itself, it should not be needed to be timed after you mount it to the engine. There should be a hole in the timing gear that the pump mounts to, and the pump should have a dowel that fits into the hole in the timing gear, and no other timing adjustment is necessary except for a minor adjustment of the timing of the pump body to the timing marks on the exterior of the pump body.

My only concern is not knowing if someone has messed with the gear and got it off a tooth or so when it was apart before me. It looks like the gear stays pretty well put when the pump is pulled. I am just unsure if when a previous owner messed with the engine if the gear got out of mesh during a transport or something of that nature. Nothing surprises me anymore.

Timing gears cannot come out of time as long as the timing cover stays on. Don't bother pulling the cover off and checking the timing marks because they will be off. This engine uses a "hunting gearset", meaning the marks only line up about once every 50 revolutions or so. Trust me, it does not matter.
 
Remove the small access cover on the right side to gain access to the pump gear bolts, remove those 3 bolts, after all inj lines, fuel lines and linkage are removed unbolt the inj pump from the back and remove it, align the new pumps timing notch in the drive hub with the dowel pin in the gear and reinstall the pump aligning the mark on the pump flange with the zero mark on the mounting plate.
Ford engines with the CAV rotary pump are the easiest engines to set pump timing on that I’ve ever worked on. There’s no special position the engine has to be turned too for marks that need aligned other than the pump flange mark to zero on the plate
 
Most Perkins and some JD engines use the SAME pump drive hub with a pin in the gear also. Pump CAN be out of time IF the pin is NOT in the hub notch. I had a service call on a four cylinder Perkins that would not start but had plenty of fuel to injectors. On inspection I found the gear pin pushed OUT of the gear, NOT flush like it should have been because it was NOT in the hub groove. I removed the three drive bolts, used an Allen wrench in the gear center hole to turn the pump until the gear roll pin was over the hub groove and tapped the pin back flush. Installed the three gear hub bolts and engine started up fine.
