The worst airfilter I have ever seen

Bought this tractor last summer, it has sat until now and I had a chance to go over it, it apparently had regular maintenance.

How many cans of brake cleaner do you think it took to "wash" it out?

Thankfully nothing made it up through the canister to the engine.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that Air Filter set up . They last Forever and you never need to buy anything . If the previous owner cleaned it at every oil change like the Ford recommendation it wouldn’t look like that . Basically it’s called lack of maintenance from a stupid and lazy owner .

I agree. They built things to last in the old days and I am happy with not having to deal with paper filter replacement. When I say worst air filter, I meant it as in the worst shape I have ever seen an air filter in.

It must have reduced performance. On the other hand, the C-15 Caterpillar owners manual told me don't you even dream of opening the air cleaner until the air restriction indicator tells you to.

Hate to burst your bubble, but I've seen far worse than that. More than once I've drilled out the spot welds on those filters, removed the wire mesh and unrolled it out on the wash rack to clean them.

Yep. Most late-model trucks and machines are that way - don't touch the filter unless the dash light tells you to. This is because today's pre-cleaner systems are so effective.

Back in the day a lot of farmers were still diversified with multiple livestock types and crops. You only owned enough tractors to get by, not one for every implement. Mow hay grind feed rake the hay you cut 2 days ago bale the hay you cut 4 days ago cultivate some beans, get ready to haul manure tomorrow. All with the same two tractors. The 80s came and money got mighty tight and you worked harder with less yet.

There might have been poor maintinence, but more from lack of labor and time, not so much lazy?

I grew up on my Uncles Dairy Farm and across the street was my Uncles Logging business . Worked for the both of them with two completely different ideas on maintenance . No breakdowns in the Logging company and the Farm everything was broken down all the time even though we all winter to do maintenance . Just plain stupidity because of all the time wasted during the winter and he knew what needed to be done and there was no excuse for it .

Yep! Cummins states the same thing about the air filter. Every time the intake system is opened is another opportunity to create an air leak and the possibility of dusting an engine. Even the constant tension hose clamps must be replaced in the original position on a used connection hose.

The filter on my 4000 was as bad if not worse. Instead of using 5 cans of brake cleaner (at $5 a can) on it I took it to the car wash and cleaned it out for $3.50.

Not really an option out here, we don't go to town very often, had to use what I had on hand.

Let it soak in a bucket of water with a lot of Tide laundry detergent or Dawn dishwashing soap in it for a day or two.

Or soak them with solvent, and set fire to them, then blow them out, if you are in a hurry.

I had a mouse keep pushing acorns down into mine.

I did soak it in gasoline overnight and blow it out. But I have failed to get it clean enough, the tractor won't start with it connected. I tried also with our pressure washer. So I ordered a replacement, I do regular maintenance so it should never be an issue again for as long as I own the tractor.
