Case 320-Conversion from 6-volt to 12-volt system

Currently have a Delco-Remy 6-volt generator with a 2-groove pulley. Will the pulley fit on a Delco, 10SI, 12-volt, 1-wire Alternator? What size Alternator is the best fit for a Case 320, 42amp or a 63 amp? I am hesitant to buying an alternator that " functions like a Delco" versus a Genuine Delco, fearing that the pulley won't fit. Any information and/or advise on what to buy and from what supplier would be greatly appreciated.

I converted a 1956 310 Delco 6v gen to Delco 10si 12V alternator years ago. The generator had the factory double pulley on it. I gave the generator away and the pulley went with it. The problem with finding a double pulley for the alternator was the pulley grooves were different sizes to accommodate different width belts. The fan belt was wider than the belt driven power steering pump belt. I had a spare gear drive PS pump so I just gave up the double pulley hunt.

The pulley should fit as far as shaft diameter. The length of the alternator shaft may be the issue. Is the pulley counterbored where the nut goes, such that the nut is inside the pulley? If so, it should work. If not, you can look into having it bored.

Trying it will tell you.

The wider pulley has a 5/8" groove and it's out there for sale. Google 5/8" double grooved pulley for alternator on Case tractor.

The nut is inside of the pulley, the outside edge being just flush with the outside pulley surface. The shaft of the generator sticks out beyond the nut 1/8 inch. Do I have to have a Genuine Delco alternator and/or will an aftermarket alternator that functions like a Delco work also? I currently do not have any type of alternator to try it on.

The double pulley that I need would have to have 1-groove 3/8 inch and the other groove 5/8 inch. Currently, I am leaning towards trying to make the double pulley on the generator work on an alternator. Thanks for the info.

The aftermarket ones are clones of the Delco ones and are usually good with some failures as with everything. I believe you would have a hard time finding an OEM 10SI Delco alternator. My understanding is (possibly with the exception of a few marine applications) Delco did not make 1 wire 10SI alternators, that is an aftermarket addition to Delco alternators. You may find Delco numbers on rebuilt alternators, but likely non-OEM parts were used internally for the rebuild.

42 or 63 amps is plenty unless you have stadium lighting or other large draw electrical accessories.

Thank you for the info. The more that I think about it, the greater the chances that I will be visiting an automobile electrical repair shop that has an outstanding reputation.

Take your generator with you, should be worth something in trade. The guy I gave my generator to had been looking for working or one worth repairing for quite some time for his 311 (pic) restoration.
