JD 1008 Rotary Cutter Slip Clutch

Never done this before but seems clutch discs in this JD 1008 cutter slip clutch have to be replaced. How many and what is the process remove/replace?

Use this link to go to the John Deere AG & Turf technical Bookstore and download a copy of the 1008 Operator's manual. It has the info on the slip clutch that you need to fix it right.

Info on the clutch is in section 65.

Has slip adjusting nut been tightened until it bottomed out?

Hey, thanks for your earlier reply. I had to get a grandkid to get me into the 1008 operating manual. I'm much less IT inclined than mechanical, and only mid range "shade tree" rated mechanically. And yes, the adjusting nut has bottomed out.

From the diagram it appears if I back that nut all way off I can begin removing clutch discs and plates. Sound right?

Slip clutch plates can't be replaced without removing slip clutch assembly from gearbox input shaft then removing nut. As I previously stated if someone hasn't adjusted nut to put more pressure on Bellville spring washers I highly recommend performing that task prior to disassembling clutch. I've owned a JD 709 rotary mower with similar slip clutch for many yrs.

TX Jim, I sure thank you for spending time on this. It gives me abit more confidence. I got the assembly off and have separated the parts to try to determine which ones are plates vs slip clutch disc and which parts need replaced. Don't let me impose, but here's a pic of disassembly - PTO would be be to the left and pressure adjusting nut to right.

The slip clutch drawing in the parts catalog names them and shows them in order, along with detail notes for checking some of them. I suggest you print the slip clutch info from the parts catalog to have in hand while checking them.

I just did that and it seems MY slip clutch has too many of ... something. The diagram indicates between adjusting nut (a) and clutch plate holder (f) there are seven (7) items - Those being spring (1) and six (6) drive plates. I THINK I have 6 worn out slip clutch plates.

Maybe the diagram just doesn't show the slip disc clutch plates. Or, maybe MY slip clutch isn't standard. OR am I overthinking this?

The slip clutch plates are shaded in parts photo & there are 6 of them part # W39301

I see: 3 drive plates (square centers), 3 slip drive discs (tabs on the outer edge), 6 slip clutch discs (round centers and OD), as shown in the parts diagram. And the 1 concave washer, which is the spring, (one washer for 1000 rpm and two for 540 rpm) right before the nut. Looks like the right parts to me.

You need to go by the parts catalog, and you will see there have been substitutions for the original discs which had the frictions bonded to the steel discs as a unit (times three), which is shown in the Operator's manual. Your slip clutch appears to be the clutch parts (non-bonded discs) used after 1989 as per the notes in the parts catalog. so you have 3 steel drive plates< with outer tabs and a friction disc on both sides of each steel disc.

The Operator's manual works for assembling and adjusting even with the part substitutions.
