Grandson and I cleaned out the solvent tank in preparation to clean some tractor parts. He pressure washed a quarter of the shop floor too. Not sure why the pics are rotated.

Service manual came in today. I hope to hear back from the machine shop this week.

Machine shop called Wednesday with no good news. Block has badly fitted sleeves over sized and I'm told he would have to have custom sleeves made. The crank is OK. I'll get all the measurements when I go over there. So, $1K for 4 sleeves if I go that route or look for a better block? Tractor has no sentimental meaning so I'm not sure what I'm going to do! Not sure I want to spend north of $4K on this engine.

My guess you will be closer to $6K after you do the injection pump and nozzles . Since there is real advantage for Diesel use in a cost versus saving comparison and there is no business to use as a write off it would be more cost efffective to change it over to a gas engine .

Hey Dreamer , What did you tell the machine shop to do ? 1) the block , the crank , all 4 rods and the head should be checked for cracks . 2) make sure the connecting rod bushings and the connecting rod bolts get replaced. 3) the crank , the rods , the pistons , the flywheel all should be balanced regardless of having the balancer on the engine . 4) the bearings in the balancer are all going to need to be replaced . 5) .0015 is the maximum clearance for the main and rod bearings . 6) make sure you use the later Gear Rotor oil pump not the old style gear to gear oil pump . 7) make sure the crankshaft bore is true and straight . 8) make both the head and the block get resurfaced . If you want it to last more than 200 hours that’s the minimum you need to do . These engine are notorious for breaking crankshafts because of cracking problems , the connecting rod bolts break because they are same ones used in gas engines and are not heavy duty enough for diesel usage . The crankshaft can be reground up to .020 NO MORE ! They were Tufftride coated at the factory . The coating is .027 to .030 thick . Once it’s gone it’s no good for use in a diesel anymore . Do it right the first time and spend the money otherwise you will be doing it again when it blows up .

Just want to say Tony rebuilt my engine . I would heed his advice. It was painful when I sold that tractor as he went through that tractor from front to back . Tractor was good for another 50 years.

Actually Vito you should explain the whole story and the other examples of the diesel engines that had to be done more than once because they thought they could save a buck cut corners . But found out the hard and expensive way . Tony
