I951 Ford 8N - Upper radiator hose tapered or straight?

On my new-to-me '51 8N, the upper radiator hose I took off (ugly!) was larger in diameter at the water pump end and smaller in diameter at the radiator input end. It was supposed to have a thermostat stuck up into the hose at the pump end, but there was NO thermosat at all! Ordered YT water pump replacement kit # 188864 (included the thermostat) but the upper hose in this kit is the same diameter at both ends - the thermostat stops about half-way into the pump end of the hose, and there is no way to attach the hose to the pump snout with the thermostat sticking half way out! Am I supposted somehow to stuff the t-stat up into the hose or do I need to find a tapered hose?

Hi icehose,
The upper hose is straight, and connects to the snout on the head.
Lower hose connects to the pump.
Its hard to push the t stat in dry.
Dish soap and a pushing with a socket on an extension are how I've done it.(push on the exterior barrel, not the smaller wax pellet)
Wax pellet to the heat.
You want the t stat just up from the snout so it warms up fast.
3rd clamp ends up near the middle of the hose.
This one could be a bit lower...

S: Thanks for pics and explanation. Oops on the wrong connection of the upper hose - cylinder head snout, of course. I'll try the soap trick next time I work on "Ole Chug".
