Florida Solar panels questions

I'd run from a house for sale if I saw solar on the roof, unless it had a 50-yr new steel roof under them. old roof under these deletes' money saved by production when it's time to replace it!! JMHO
Remember back when they had the black water heater thingies on the roof... And soon the roof leaked and damaged the house. Run away as fast as you can.

The cost of unsubsidized utility grade solar is heading north of a $100 per MWh not including the cost of battery storge to support it. The capacity credit for solar facilities is being substantially lowed by the reginal transmission authorities starting in 2028. Residential roof top solar appears to be running in the $150-$170 per MWh again not including the cost of battery storage to make it 24/7. A homeowner with a large enough system including storage and a commitment to demand control can go off grid. unfortunately, the number of homeowners with a south facing exposed roof is far short of a 100%. Actual usage studies have shown that customers with roof top tend to use more utility electricity then the average customer. Boiling water reactors are a proven technology; the only failures were driven by almost absolute stupidity.

After working on solar installations for close to 20 years, some of the arguements really puzzle me.I can't ever recall working on any subsidized jobs, but there had to have been a few.My friend that I worked for told me to never debate with the haters, they will never let facts get in the way of their views. That's why I stay out of most people talking about it.It is very entertaining to read some of the arguements though.Seeing dozens upon dozens of installations that pay for themselves had me convinced 15 years ago.Same thing with our electric car.Picked up our new one a week ago.The new one is an upgraded version of the old one.I could go deaf listening to all the screaming about how they never work out,My wife likes that $15-$20 dollars per month to plug it in versus the $150+ per month for gas in her Lincoln.
Seeing another post to this thread prompted me to check on how the payback of my array is coming. When I signed up for it the payback was projected to be eleven years, so that I would then have fourteen years of free electricity. I have now had the system for forty months and it has made $9,000.00 dollars worth. So it is paid off!!! I now will have free electricity for the next twenty years! I wish to thank all of you who chipped in to help me buy it but have not yet opted to go with it yourselves.

$560,000.00 per MW for just the panels . Plus delivery, setup, structure, land, invertors , utility service, legal fees , etc. So at least a million US per MW for just a grid tie invertor system with zero storage . It appears that most greenies do not grasp grade 8 public school math. Rare are those that understand the difference between one hundred, one thousand, one million, one billion or one trillion. They believe that somebody else is paying the bill. They also so arragant they believe that they have the power to affect the world's climate.

I saw pictures where the was the custom (apparently) in Florida for flat roof buildings.

This! Insurance companies are beginning to reject rooftop solar as they generally ruin the roof and any homes were not engineered to handle the added weight during storm events. Plus they always leak and you can easily have a lot of damage that is not readily visible until it is at a critical level. I honestly can't figure out why folks don't just pay the electric bill and move on.

I've open land that I could put solar panels on, but I don't feel that they are worth it here in Michigan.

For some, as showcrop has told us in this thread, it does pay and there is a benefit. I would love to be completely off grid with diesel and propane backup, but it's still cost prohibitive for me.

That is my situation also. WHEN I install a system it will NOT be feeling power to the grid. I have installed 2 - 4KW systems for a mission I have been involved with since 2004. They systems are totally self contained and provide some lighting and refrigeration. One installed 2014, the other 2015. The biggest problem, at that time was storage. The deep cycle lead acid batteries are so easily damaged by over discharge.

With newer LiFePO4 batteries, that is not such a big issue. So I have READ, I Have no real life experience with them... yet. MY thoughts are that a 10KW system would keep our home functional in the event of a power failure. Panles would keep batteries charges, a generator would would make up for cloudy days.

For me, it is more about staying healthy, than saving money. The "grid" is under more and more stress. I feel the question is not IF, but WHEN it will be needed.

With careful planning, you can start a system then expand as funds become available. PLANNING is the key,

Just my point of view.

When my array was installed the rep (owner, next door neighbor) took a lot of pictures that were submitted to an engineering firm to get their approval. It was also inspected by the local building inspector. The system used for sealing to the roof uses hybrid polymer sealants and adhesives. These are time proven as they have been in use for many years, so the incidence of leaks is 1-2% of installs. 1-2% is much more than it should be but you tell me of any type of service that doesn't have a few substandard operators. My system is a little over three years old and has already paid for itself in the savings. Why in the world would I want to pay for twenty years worth of electricity when I get it free????? Where do you get such bad information??????? You must have to search for hours to find what you want. Just googling any of this will give you thousands of hits to choose from.

I am at a latitude very close to that of Grand Rapids.

And yet they are all the same. A properly sited solar array will provide its owner with cheap reliable electrical power, in all areas except perhaps northern AK.

Yet not. Unless of course you're familiar with everyone's local situation and their cost/benefit ratio... Anecdotes do not data make. You're now speaking strictly of sited solar without the financial implications you so boast about. Everyone's situation is unique.

I really think that most people that hate them have no understanding about how they work. Some seem to think that if the sun isn't perfectly positioned, your house will run out of juice. One brother in law did his about 15 years ago,and did geothermal heating and cooling along with it.His estimated break even time was estimated to be 7 years,it was paid for in 4.Plus it has paid him a lot more cash back than he anticipated too.My wifes brother is a few miles off the road, and built a battery and solar setup years ago.Seems to work for him,we never hear anythins about it and everything works when we're there.I have never once worked on a solar setup involving batteries.I was kind of surprised that my installer friend had never worked on one either.

Its what they are told, just like many other alternative facts (y)

They have been told renewables won't work, yet they actually work all over this country and the world.

And before all the villagers with touchscreens ;) and pitchforks chime in, that is hyperbole and a generalization, but its fits what I quoted.

It's like our screens are mirrors...

I engage in these conversations with family, friends, and strangers in public the same as I do on forums. I would hazard to say that 90% of the people cannot articulate why they think renewables will not work,

Edited cause some find anecdotal evidence political, sorry about that (y)

I am not offering to set up solar for anyone, so I don't need to know about anyone's local situation. The same fact holds true: properly sited they will work very well.

No you don't but I agree- they will work. Yet financially speaking everyone is different so to boast about the benefits is anecdotal at best.
