Massey Ferguson 175 auxiliary hydraulic pump

I recently bought a MF175 with a front end loader with the Perkins in it. I got it home and really started looking at it and found there to be multiple things hacked/ pieced together not right. Finally got all the leaks and wiring fixed. Don't know much about massey and have been trying to do research but not finding much. The bucket moves up very slowly. It has the factory diverter valve on the driver side not in the top plate like others I've seen. The bucket goes up very very slowly. It curls fine and 3rd arm moves good but bleeds down as soon as the tractor is turned off. With any weight in the bucket it won't go up at all. I tried all the levers on the side moving them to constant pump and trying in ever position but same results. Thought maybe it was the front end loader but I can connect the hydraulic hoses to another tractor and all functions work properly. This left me with the valve on the tractor and the pump to be at fault? I bypassed the valve and hooked hoses straight to the ports coming out the driver side and still slow and weak going up but still curls fine. I'm thinking the auxiliary pump can't supply enough pressure to operate the up feature on bucket. I don't have access to a pressure gauge to check output. Does anyone know the o rings and seals I'll need and what pump to replace to get this work horse back out in the field?

Welcome to the forums.

We need some pictures of what you have to go with your descriptions, before good suggestions can be given of what you might need to repair it. If you actually have the auxiliary hydraulics, it is a separate pump and system from the standard internal hydraulics. Pictures of valves, controls, connection ports, etc. will help. You may need to resize your pictures to get them to post. the site has a size limit of about 7MB total of pictures per post and many phone camera pictures now push that limit.

You really need to acquire a pressure gauge good for 5000 psi (3000 psi would be a minimum), if you want to be able to check things. They can be found for reasonable prices on Amazon and eBay. DO NOT use an oxygen gauge. Oil in an oxygen gauge can cause an explosion if the gauge is used on/returned to oxygen service.
 
Yes I tried swapping connections at spool valves with no change. Curl still worked but lift did not. The hoses are still routed to bypass that valve when I was thinking something internal of that valve was faulty. Plan on putting everything back to the way it was tomorrow evening. I'm thinking this one does have the auxiliary pump but still very new to massey ferguson. Thank yall. There should be 3 pictures uploaded showing the set up not sure if they uploaded or not.

Also tried adjusting the little flathead screw on bottom of valve to single stage and double stage rams but there was not change at all. Can not hear any difference in anything such as engine load or rpm change when placing in constant pumping
 
A new member posted a picture of his MF 175 just yesterday. He said it's been completely rebuilt and painted. It's in the for sale section. He might have some answers for you.
 
What are you calling the third arm? Does the loader have a grapple or do you mean the three-point hitch at the rear of the tractor?

It looks like you have the auxiliary hydraulics system. That is not a diverter valve it is the control valve for the auxiliary hydraulic system and should control remote couplers. It is not related to the diverter valve that can be used on the right front corner of the lift cover. The auxiliary hydraulic system has its own pump and that system is separate from the pump for the three-point. The Draft and Position levers that control the three-point lift have nothing to do with the auxiliary system., that has its own valve, like yours has.

I suggest you hook things back up correctly and do a pressure test at the remote couplers to see what that pump is doing. The first thing you need to know is what is being sent to the loader valve.


Do you have the Operator's and Service Manuals for your tractor? You should also find a copy of Massey Ferguson publication #690562M_ (the M number might be 1, 2, or 3), this is the more detailed Operator's Manual for Basic &Auxiliary Hydraulics Systems for MF 130 thru MF 180 Tractors. It gives explanations of the different options. There is a pdf copy at The Classic Machinery Network, but I don't know if you can access it unless you join there.

If the auxiliary pump has to be replaced/rebuilt the tractor has to be split to do it. There may be different parts need if they used different pumps during production, that likely won't be known for certain until you split it. It might be just packings in the loader lift cylinders; pressure testing will help pinpoint the issue.

Yes 3rd arm is 3 point up and down function. Yes I have the Operator's Manual along with parts book. Waiting on service manual to come in mail. If it was the cylinders why would it work fine when the hydraulic hoses are hooked to a different tractor? Main question is can that "control valve" be bypass by hooking lines to the side of the case ports that are pictured to rule out the pump? If same problem is present with hoses hooked straight to the ports before the "control valve" would this not leave the pump as the only thing left at fault?

You should call the three-point hitch by the correct name, three-point hitch. Some loaders have a third hydraulic function that can operate a grapple (some grapples are narrow and look like an arm) and saying third arm could be a grapple on the loader. How much weigh can the bucket curl? It would take more pressure to lift the loaders than it will to curl an empty bucket.

It is looking like the pump is likely at fault, but a pressure test with a pressure reading confirms the pressure the pump is delivering.

Bucket curls an easy 250 but didnt try to max it out. again like I stated in the very first post. I am fairly confident the pump is at fault. I'm wondering if anyone knows of all the o rings and seals needed to replace the pump. Trying not to tear this down in the shop before I have the parts that will for sure need to be replaced along with pump so it's not in the way for am extended amount of time if it can be avoided.
 
Below is a link to the parts book for the 175. There are some options for the auxiliary pumps used based on transmission, PTO, serial number, etc.. You can see if you find the one you know matches your tractor's set up and order parts. I would not try to tell you what to order as my guess would stand as good of chance of being wrong as being right without having all the needed info.

The smart thing for you to do is get the proper pressure gauge and check the output of the pump. A tired pump is the most likely cause of your problem.
 
I bought this complete main and aux pump over 15 years ago. Never used it in my 1967 MF 150. Being inexperienced with MF, I didn't notice it had a 21 spline main shaft, mine being a 10? spline.
