How to Remove this Seal from Cylinder?

I removed the snapring, and below it is this metal(?) seal. How would i go about removing it, its hard and my pick cant really find a spot, would appreciate any help.

A drill and a screw then pull it out. But if it is leaking there is an oring/packing deeper which you need to totally disassemble. Waste of time to replace just that seal. The ram is in poor shape.

Since the snap-ring is removed, you may try using the ram's piston/packing gland to knock the seal out from behind.
( Similar to using a slide hammer. )

That looks like an Oliver 550 (or GM/corvette) power steering ram, but from the angle of the photo without much scale I can't tell if it's bigger/smaller, etc. If so, there's 5 pieces including the snap ring. The actual seal is the last item removed.

If it is the same, here's a couple of videos that might help. I'd take a pick and start working that piece in circles until it comes loose, but I'd clean it really well first. That thing is a mess.

If you strapped the piston so it wouldn't fly out could you pressurise the cylinder a little until the seal moved outwards?
I did do this with a simple single acting Ferguson ram with good results.

Thank you, i think it is similar so i might buy a replacement from one of those. I got the top one out with a drill and screw but the bottom one is tougher. If you per chance have a oliver 550 cylinder if you happen to have rod diameter that would be appreciated/

It is unfortunately, I would replace but jacobsen doesnt sell anymore and ive been trying to find a compatible replacement. Im thinking if i emory cloth it and just change seals I can deal with a small weeping leak for now.

I don't have one handy, sorry, but if that's what you're working with there's a chance a GM will work.

I'd take the rod to a machine shop. It may not be as bad as you'd think to have a new rod made.

Yes any good machine shop or welding shop should be able to fix you

For what it's worth, I found the diameter on another forum for the OD of the Corvette rod, it's 9/16" (0.5625"). A new C2/C3 complete cylinder seems to be anywhere from $100-200, so I wouldn't go the machine shop route at all if it fits your application- which is what by the way?

Thank you i measured nad its 0.56 so it should be good. While I save up for that do you happen to know what type of seal I should be looking for as a temporary stop measure for a while? Thanks

The correct seals are usually sold in kits for the cylinder. For what tractor or application is this cylinder?

Measure ID, OD, and width. Then try Granger or McMaster Carr

A little late now but the rod is attached to a cylinder. Usually if you put a slide hammer on the rod you can tap the seal out with the piston.

You should be able to grab the rod and use it like a slide hammer to remove the seal.

From the looks of the rod. I would want to know what kind of shape the cylinder, piston and o-rings were in before I spent money on new wiper seals.
