A friend in Iceland has this in his shop. Recently fashioned a new hydraulic rod and fitting for his JCB backhoe. Threaded the end for the gland and welded the fitting on the other end from his old part.

The machine was used in a factory that made winches for trawlers and some other equipment. I’m impressed that he even knows how to use it.

(He built up the weld so it’s even with the rod. I took these pics early in the project)

There was something special about those threads, I don’t know what. He said it was supposed to be difficult to get it right but it was actually easy (for him, anyway).

I watch Cutting Edge Engineering (Australia) on YouTube. He does a lot of cylinder repair on Mine Haul Trucks and other big equipment. Makes it look easy. Of course years of experience and the right toy....uh...tools have a lot to do with that.

He actually said he watched a lot of utoob videos of people with similar machines. He’s an excellent welder and fabricator, already knew how to use a lathe. This one has I don’t know how many dials and adjustments. Czech-made machine.

I work at hyd shop, we could make rods,pistons, glands. Could do up 3 inch rods, 2 1/2 barrels. Did a lot on 1/2 wore out manuel lathe the moved up to digital programable lathe.

I forget the diameter of the rod, I know it was heavy. He replaced it due to rust pitting on the old one. He could have bought the assembly new but saved a few thousand dollars doing it this way.

No way I could use that lathe... No turret, no coolant, and metric only so everything I made would end up 1/25 scale.

We’re in business,that the hot set up . I have to get on my knees to read the inch chart ,but that’s not a show stopper .
It’s got the company notch !
