Everywhere I look it says I need the distributor that has the gear on the bottom of it - see pic. However mine has a slotted tip that matches up to a shaft with a rectangular tip - see picture.
It appears that my Distributor is Prestolite, not Delco, nor IHC. In the side of it there is a hole, that likely had a rubber grommet at one time where the wire passes into the distibutor. Evidently mine lost the grommet and what we suspect is water or snow got in and froze, then I cranked it and the slotted tip bent.
This answers the question - why was it running and not we can't get it to hit in many cases after replacing the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor, condenser. We pulled the distrubutor out of the tractor and expecting a gear - we were surprised to find a slotted tip that fits over a shaft end.
Need help here. The IH 2405 is the loboy industrial version of the IH Ag 454.
