Mechanically or result wise?
The 77 went in front because of the location of the pulley and the fact that the 60 has a pulley shield. The 60 spins a bit faster and didn’t most of the pull. Not until the pulley loaded would the 77 catch up.

Results wise? After a couple attempts on positioning we were able to run 3 logs through for some confused onlookers. We did have the belts switch inside/ outside on their own once. (Don’t asked me to explain that!) We shut down and walked the short belt inside and started up again.

Can’t say if both being green paint has any feasibility.
 
Apparently there are 2 belts, a shorter one for the Oliver and a much longer one for the JD. Both belts must be running straight rather than twisted. I remember the old timers saying a twisted belt stays on the pulleys better. What I don't understand is how the long belt get past the Oliver.

The build is right on a fleet line for the belt to pass between the fender and floorplate past the pto lever and over the axle.
This also works on the F-xx series Farmalls.

Many other makes will not work as a front pulley tractor.

this is last year’s UG run with a 66 and the 77.
The E3 in the back would be a candidate, but it’s not our tractor.

This isn’t for necessity of power. It’s just a stunt that you don’t see every day.
 
A twisted belt reverses direction of the pulley on the machine that is being driven. Unless you double twist which I have not been involved with flat belts enough to know if that would work.
But an inside out belt stays on better and to the untrained eye gives the illusion of a twist.

Some people get bothered by that.
 
I believe they did the same thing this week at the Platte Co mo Steam show. They used to mini steamers to run the saw.

Ah, I see. As I said really no experience with belting equipment. The first square bale elevator we had used a belt pulley driven reduction box and a 10 ft shaft running over to the lower elevator sprocket shaft. That was in the mid to late sixties, I was born in 62. I do remember being on the tractor, placing it, to line up the belt. We also occasionally used a a belt driven IH No 9 hammer mill, for some part of processing alfalfa seed. Seems like it came out of the combine in dried flower clusters, after those dried some time on a wagon they were run through the hammer mill running at a slow speed to break up the clusters and dislodge the seed. Then it was run through a fanning mill (seed cleaner) to separate out the seed.
 
I think it was at Rantoul a couple shows ago there was a guy running a setup on a corn sheller with either 2 Allis Wd’s or WC’s or one of each (cant remember exactly) on the same belt. Front tractor had a special tensioner and pulley mounted on it to get the belt up over and back to the second tractor. Guess the pair was set up together back in the late 40s or early 50s to run a thrashing machine.
 
Seems to me that those belts running like that would create friction and start smoking?
They’re both turning/moving the same speed. I suppose there is some amount of expansion between the inner and outer arc of the belt as it wraps/bends around the pulley, but that would be internal to each belt. I would think there would be some slippage from the power being applied, between the stacked belts that would cause some friction and heat.

They do something similar at Hitch “Gathering of The Orange” with a C stuck in there.
 
As posted before somewhere on here......I had a pretty good sized hammer mill and had a lot of 6' plus corn stalks. Neighbor had a JD B I think it was with a pulley and a belt over 10' long...forget but mill was way out in front of the tractor. He'd get the mill going at a good RPM, signal me to load a wad of stalks, the B would grunt but kept on chugging and we got the job done. He told me that the flywheel mass on the B and the length of the belt contained a lot of Kinetic Energy that was expelled when the load was applied and is what kept things turning.
