Clutch adjusting

All you can really do is adjust free play. So does adding free play make the clutch engage sooner ? The clutch moves 97 % of its stroke before engaging too hard in the last little bit of travel Adice appreciated

Adding free play will make the clutch engage lower within the travel of the pedal. Too much free play and the clutch will not disengage.

That's pretty close to none. As the clutch wears the free play diminishes and if it goes too far the clutch will slip.

Stroke, is a mechanical clutch linkage? Has it worked or is it a new replacement?

Yes adding free play makes the clutch engage sooner. As long as you have some free play and not so much that it won't disengage you can adjust it anywhere in-between to adjust where you want the clutch to engage.
