Enlisted 12 July 1962. OCS 29 Oct 62. Commissioned Mar 1963. 3 sea tours...refrigerated cargo ship AF out of Norfolk, XO on LST out of Little Creek, and DDG out of San Diego. Made one WestPac trip to I-Corps doing shore call-fire bombardment and chasing carriers in plane guard position. Retired June 1983.

Nov 11 1983, 10 months of DEP because of the rate I chose. Showed up in San Diego 5 Sept 1984. Played the game for 23yrs

Tomorrow March 17, I left the farm and joined the Navy, for four years of fun. Stan

I received a draft notice and on my birthday in 1959, after finishing high school, I went to Houston and signed up for the draft as required. That was my first stop for the day. The second stop was the USAF recruiter and I signed up spending 9 years with them. No way did I want to be slopping through swamps, living in the rain, eating out of C ration cans, and other niceties.

I never answered the call, not that I would have been opposed to it. My path just had other opportunities. Thanks to all that served.

I received my draft notice two weeks after Kennedy exempted married men from the draft. Aug. 16 1966. Received my orders for RVN just before Christmas1966.

Nov 20, 1984 shipped out of Minneapolis for several fun filled months at Orlando RTC then on to 7 more years active and 2 reserve

Drafted Aug. 16, 1966, 2 weeks after Kennedy exempted married men from the draft. Dad wanted me to go join the Navy. I couldn't swim so waited on the draft. Three weeks later I was crawling in mud and water underneath barbed wire, with a machine gun firing over my head. Retired 21 yrs. later.

Nov. 15, 1962, off to Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. by bus. Arrived there late at night. First thing I thought was "what am I getting into?" 6 months of active duty for training (Army National Guard) 6 year enlistment that lasted for 40+ years.
