FEL plumbing on a 4020 with no rock shaft

Good evening,

I would like to put a FEL on my 4020. My 4020 is a standard with no rock shaft. I have read here where an oil line to the loader control valve was connected to the fitting going to the rock shaft (near the brake cylinders) and then a return back to the fitting on the rock shaft oil return line, behind the hydraulic filter, or into the filter cover.

Since my tractor has no rock shaft or oil lines for one, where can I get the oil supply for the loader? Last resort would be one of the rear remotes.

Any knowledge you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There's a #10 ORB plug in the side of the priority valve that covers a port that can function as a pressure supply for additional SCVs.

I forgot to say that my tractor is a 1965 4020. Don’t know if that makes a difference. It has dual remotes. I have to locate the priority valve, where did Deere hide that?

Looking at the diagrams on the JD Parts catalog online I don’t see the plug you mentioned. There are two drain plugs shown.

I have to get the tractor outside where I can see better and investigate further.

Priority valve is located on RH side in front of firewall. Plug encircle in green box is the plug one removes to attach remote hyd control valve pressure line. I'm not familiar with hyd lines on tractors that had no rockshaft but on tractors with RS the return oil line from a remote hyd valve I recommend routing return oil to line in 2nd photo which I think your tractor will have a hex plug in trans case but I failed to locate that hex plug in 4020 parts catalog. Here's a couple of pictures from our 3020(same configuration as our 4020 just easier for me to take a picture of......)

I also just realized that in my first post I'd said the plug is on the side. It's technically on the bottom of the priority valve. Also, the pictures I posted ended up on their side for some reason unknown to me. LOL

You guys are the best.

I believe I can figure it out now:
-Install a line from the bottom outlet (where the plug is) going to my loader control valve.
-run a return line from loader valve to transmission near the filter (if my tractor has the hex plug) or into the filter cover
-make sure the loader control valve is for closed center

Does that sound correct?

I'm almost 100 % positive that your 4020 trans case will have a hex plug to the rear of the hyd filter.

I do realize how you said your tractor was equipped, but is there a plug there? I don’t know how the Standard no 3 point changed the hydraulics of the tractor, since that is in a casting I would think the port would be pressurized no matter how the tractor was optioned. Those Deeres had closed center hydraulics so it could be blocked with full stand-by pressure behind the plug, without any flow and harm nothing.

I can’t see a plug but the cab floorboard might be in the way to see it, and the tractor is back in the darker end of my shed.

I see what you mean. Looking through the JD parts catalog it FINALLY sunk into my head that if the tractor would have been equipped with a rock shaft, the control valve would be in the rear, cable operated and pressured oil would come from where the plug should be.

Thanks for making me look into this closer. I’ll get the tractor outside in better light and find that plug.

It's my understanding from viewing 4020 parts catalog that there is no hyd pressure at that orifice in clutch housing due to no hyd line attached to lower portion of priority valve that would supply pressure oil to that orifice in clutch housing. I checked 4020 parts catalog but I did not locate a plug listed part # R39112 for that location in clutch housing for tractors with rockshaft delete option so I think that hole in clutch housing might be be open if tractor has no rockshaft. Plug in 2nd photo in green box is for rockshaft delete. IE no hyd line connects to orifice in clutch housing that you referred to.

That's the same location I've been referring to to attach return oil hose from FEL control valve
