Road bands on tractors

Post #3 is good as is putting the new band on with no locators, then welding tabs at 5 places around the band that position the band so it cant move sideways, and 2 or three that keep it from rotating. A 1/2 inch band 4 to 6 inches wide can work for most steel wheel rea tractors of 10,000 pounds.
Raising the band above the tips of the lugs also increases the ground speed. The Allis shown in Post 4 is an example, but support between attachment points is more important as the band is not supported by lug tips. Jim
 
At one time I owned three tractors on steel with road bands, including the 22-36 in my avatar. After having the band rolled I put them around the lugs then clamped it in several places and trimmed the end if need be leaving a gap of an inch or so. Cut two pieces of 2 1/2x 2 1/2 x 3/8 angle iron the same length as the band width. Next drill two 13/16' holes in one flange for 3/4 grade 8 draw bolts as close to the center as can be leaving room for the bolt heads and a socket. Tack weld them on the bands, inside of course, leaving an inch or so of band past the angle iron. (the gap and extra past the angle is so you have room to trim the band if need be while tightening. Weld the angle iron to the bands only good enough to be able to snug the band with two 3/4 draw bolts. If everything is OK fully weld the angles and draw the band tight. You don't want to end up with a large gap nor do you want the angle irons too far back from the end. I've never had one move or come loose after moving the tractor and retightening the bands. The bands are 1/2 or 3/8 x 6 hot rolled strip, depends on the weight of the tractor and how far apart the lugs are.

The bands will be going on this 1929 Farmall. Weighs about 3500#. I have good lug wheels which I will put on this tractor and add road bands. The tire tread attempt in the picture is the roughest riding thing imaginable. Thanks everyone for the replies.
