1020 John Deere crank not start

I hope y’all all find this post and you’re doing well. I ran out of diesel two days ago. I’ve been trying to get it started. There’s fuel going into injector pump, but the injector pump is not putting out any fuel. I open up the bleed valve on the injector pump and crank the motor and it just kinda dribbles out. It does not have any compression when I checked fuel delivery at the injectors negative he got ran dry so I’m assuming injector pump didn’t go out but that’s probably a bad assumption at this point. please help and advise if you can appreciate it thanks in advance.

Which type inj pump does this 1020 have(JDB or CBC)? Does your tractor IP have an electrical fuel solenoid? If so is it getting 12 volts when ign switch is in on position?

The injector pump in a John Deere I don’t think it has an electric solenoid. I looked thru the manual and there is no reference to a electric solenoid

When it was running did you pull a cable/rod to shut it off or just turn the key off? Post a picture of the tag on your injection pump.

Yes to turn the tractor off I need to push the rod in

Just to confirm the steps you took. Did you replace the fuel filter(s)?

Did you crack the high-pressure lines lose at the injectors? Fuel stop in the run position and the throttle lever set to about 3/4 open? Then crank the engine over (transmission in neutral of course). It may be a bit of cranking before the fuel dribbles out at the injectors. Do not expect a major fuel spray from the lines.

I did not replace the fuel filter. I did crack the high-pressure lines at loose at the injectors. I did have the throttle to about three-quarter and I’ve been cranking for a bit. I keep having to stop and charge a battery and then I install another battery crank a little bit until the battery dies, and then going back-and-forth charging batteries, if it’s gonna take a bit and I guess I’ll just keep at it and see what happens but one thing I did check is to make sure that I was getting fuel into the injector pump that positively is happening because I checked the inlet line, but the injectors are not putting anything out, but I’ll keep cranking and see what happens

I recommend that you change the fuel filter. In order to save wear/tear on starter ""if your tractor doesn't have rare option of hyd hi-lo or reverser"" I would tow start your tractor in an attempt to get engine operating. When attempting to tow start engine crankshaft & inj pump shaft will rotate much faster than when using starter therefore pumping more diesel fuel per second. I've had tractor engine start operating almost immediately when tractor was towed that wouldn't start by using starter.

How is the flow from the tank? Maybe plugged in the tank.
The flow from the tank to the filter is good. I can get diesel to come out of the bleed hole on the injector pump. But it just dribbles out but Jim says it won’t come at very fast.

So I towed it today for quite a bit with my truck clutch out in second gear transmission sitting in eighth gear I wanna say maybe a mile and a half and it would not start so I’m kinda at loss as to what exactly is wrong with this thing help if you can.

I also have confirmed that there is fuel being pumped into the injector pump. So my question is has the injector pump failed

I suggest to loosen the 2 screws on IP timing window, pry gasket away from IP body with fuel leaking out of window then route a wire from battery positive post to fuel control solenoid on IP. Now attempt tow starting engine. If engine doesn't start & fuel is leaking from window then I think inj pump needs attention.

I’m gonna try to get you in a couple days Jim, but if you could do me a favor and point out the injection pump solenoid location on the body where I hook the wire I’d appreciate it. I have no idea where that solenoid is.

No solenoid on this injector pump. You said just push the rod in to shut-off the tractor? Could be the metering valve is stuck in the off position?

Yes, I do have to push the rod in to turn it off. I’m confused at where I run the wire to. I don’t know where to run the wire to after I pulled it off the timing cover. And Is the meter valve inside the pump?

I do not know where you would have taken that wire off of? Your injector pump is a manual shut-off. And the metering valve is under the three screw cover! Take off the return fuel line. Take out the three cover screws The metering valve is at pump head end in that compartment. It has a metal arm on top with a long spring attached. You should be able to turn the arm left and right freely. It is probable stuck. Will not move?
