8N PTO engage lever not disengageing PTO

I have a maintenance problem with my 8N tractor (circa 1949 s/n 166XXX) that has been working fine since 1961. Just recently, when at operating temperature, the PTO lever operates normally but does not disengage the PTO. However, when left to cool, I was able to operate the lever and disengage the PTO.

I am looking for possible causes and insights into fixing the problem. I was getting ready to remove the lever access plate to investigate, but wasn't sure if I first needed to drain (or partially drain) the hydraulic fluid.

I would pull the right side plate instead.
If your oil isn't over-full, you can park on a very slight downhill and you won't lose oil.
Remove the bottom bolts first. They will tell you if you are on a steep enough slope.

I would go ahead and remove the lever access plate. I don't think one can see what's going on from the other side. The mechanism is fairly simple. The lever just slides a coupler to either engage or disengage the two shafts.

Hi linde, Welcome aboard!
Look at the end of the shaft the pto lever turns, and move the lever. Is there much play between shaft and pinned on lever?

The lever needs to move the pto shift rail rearward to disengage the shift clutch sleeve. Would need to drain the hydro fluid to get an look.
Is the nut on the end of the rail tight?
Is the pto stop worn?
